Duke Nukem may be gone... forever

3D Realms is rumoured to have shut its doors, and with the closure comes the loss of a cherished, wished for franchise...

The very reliable Shacknews is quoting a very reliable source that has some very sad news.

3D Realms, and therefore Duke Nukem Forever, is dead.

There's been no official announcement, but the source states that finances - or lack of them - is the reason for 3D Realms closure. Forever has been delayed for what seems like, well, forever, but now it's not looking like we'll ever get to enjoy the subtle wit and cerebral thrills of good old Duke ever again.

Coming on top of the news that THQ made a loss of something like $US430 million, the game industry is beginning to look like it's not quite as immune to the tricky financial climate as first thought.

Damn.

can't someone else buy it now and actually do soemthing with it instead of slowly strangling an otherwise cool game.

considering the history of this franchise surely someone would pick it up if not for the cheap/free advertising the game would get through the net.

I lolled so hard when I read it was due to finances, they cut their own throats.

A game company actually needs to make a game every now and again to keep a float. perhaps they didnt get the memo.

Makes me want to break out the ol Duke Nukem 3D CD and give it a go, but the old-timey graphics would make my eyes bleed. (If I could even get it working under Vista) and it probably doesn't even have mouse-look.

If they pulled finger and released a Duke game they could pay off the debt of a third world country so a 'paltry' 430 million wouldn't be too hard. We should be playing the 6th or 7th installment by now, this could have been a massive franchise. What a wasted opportunity, didn't these people want to make money?

A must read for any DNF fan.....if it's true, GB should be ashamed of himself.
