XFX 4770 overclocks like a champ on air

Sneak-peek: We push the XFX 4770 in our Labs to an astounding OC level!

Overclocking is something that makes us weak at the knees, especially so when something is unexpectedly awesome at it - the XFX 4770 both doubled us over in joy and punched us in the back of the skull with it's overclocking prowess.

It's the first 40nm desktop graphics card we've looked at yet, and with the full complement of 640 shader units running at 750MHz stock it was dying for some tuning.

We threw it into our testbed and fired up Catalyst, hitting the max core clock of 830MHz without blinking, but this was nowhere near acceptable.

Thanks to an extremely helpful guide posted up on Legit Reviews we installed Rivatuner and got to overclocking the 4770 seriously...the bloody thing just kept on powering through each clockspeed we threw at it, laughing manically.

With a disbelieving stare we hit our final core and memory speeds - 934MHz core and 839MHz memory! This is a huge 25% core speed increase, achieved on the stock cooler without altering the fan speed at all, which passed 3DMark06 completely stably.

Check out the XFX 4770's GPUz page for more info, and make sure you snap up Issue 102 of Atomic for the full review of this incredibly capable card!

how come reviewers get the good version with the (cool looking!) dual slot cooler, while retailers get the cheaper cards with the dicky little heatsink?

xfx are apparantly bringing this one into the country though

512MB and 1GB version would have different looks I assume.

omfg.. i may have to pick up one of these hot lil things.
The difference between the 512 and 1gb cards would be minimal i would imagine, but i guess we will find out when 1gb versions are released.

Is Atomic slipping? What an unprofessional picture. :P

Tezlin, what do you mean? It's a shot of the card in the testbed. Unless it's somehow confusing to test the card outside a case? :P

any chance of testing one of the ones with the cheap little heatsink and comparing the results? id read that not only were the heatsinks different, but the voltage reg chips were too (to cut further on costs), and that reviewers were only given the better version.
so im curious if the retail ones will also get 25% overclocks (although my mate has 2 and he cant get squat out of his..)

I'll see what I can do, there's a reference 4770 on the way (supposedly). No promises, I'm already pretty busy with the site and mag, but I'll do my best!

ok if you buy the xfx 4770 choose the YDFC not the YDLC ( the one with the small fan ) cause the one they testing there is the xfx 4770 YDFC with a huge cooler.
