Team Fortress 2 Spy and Sniper update - Plus a free weekend - Plus 50% off!

Team Fortress 2's update is out, bringing incredible value and a brand new update to two whole classes!

Team Fortress 2 is one of the most popular online games for a bloody good reason, being addictive and fun as well as original and creative.

We found out last week that the Sniper was getting an update in the form of the Huntsman Bow, Razorback and a final item called Jarate (literally an entire jar of piss that featured in the Meet the Sniper video), adding a lot of interest to TF2's already adoring fans.

Not content with that, Valve also announced a Spy update, bringing in two new cloaking watches as well as a huge revolver called The Ambassador - throwing in a Meet the Spy video for good measure.

Adding even more to the bubbling crockpot of excitement is the fact that the update is released right now! Like now! Like go play it!

Those who don't have the game are even treated to an incredibly special deal this weekend only, where you can play the game free of charge all weekend - and it's also 50% off!

This is a sure-fire way to kickstart the game, and if you've never gotten into it before this is hands-down the absolute best time to get in - give it a try for free then pick it up for only US$9.95.

Looks like Atomic is set for the weekend too - we'll be playing the whole damn time (thanks to forum user smadge1 for the heads-up on this).

Head over to the Steam store to grab yourself a copy of Team Fortress 2, and get back into the cartoony craze that is sweeping across all gamers!

question: does it require a copy of hl2 to play? i ask because i used to play the old version that required a licence for quake 3

No, it doesn't need HL2 at all. Just Steam, and the game :)

You don't need hl2 to play it but you will need the source engine. This is why (if you buy the orange box) that initially everygame is 3GB and over to download. But once you download your first game (and in doing so the source engine) all the other games are now measured in MB :)

If you already have the source engine (from another valve game) then your download will be a lot smaller.

Sorted! Downloaded and ready to roll.
Time to give TF2 a go today (now that I actually have some free time!)

This is the stupidest weapon system ever.

Jesus Christ.

I had some fun on Sunday night after getting my Jarate and Hunstman. These toys make the Sniper a much more aggressive class. You want to infiltrate the enemy base to coat them in Jarate and shoot an arrow through their tiny heads. Got all the spy toys too, but haven't had a chance to play with them yet.

You bastard smadge1, I played half the weekend and got the can of energy drink for the scout! I was hoping to get some of the toys for the spy! Oh well have to keep playing I guess :)

I got the Huntsman (13+ hours) and Jarate (~5 minutes), which does make the Sniper a bloody fun class to attack with - brings you right up to the frontlines and rewards a good aim with hilarious pinning of peeps to walls. The amount of times I broke into laughter while playing that class was very impressive!

The William Tell Overture acheivement is quite notable, I even got some screenies of TheFrunj's attempt!

Best idea on weapons system.

Encourages people to play all the classes, because it doesn't matter what class you are, you have equal opportunity to unlock weapons. Additionally it discourages all these 'achievement' servers that popup during these updates for people to just farm them.

Good update.

Random is not good.

We have no idea when we'll get a weapon, nor any way to influence our chances of getting it.

"Discourages achievement servers"? You're kidding right? Go look up "achivement_idle" servers. Thousands of people sitting in them to get their weapons through NOT PLAYING at all. You cannot stop farming ever, and further taking away the ability to get it over and done with quickly was DOWN SYNDROME STUPID.

Horrible update.
