Intel makes Core i3 and i5 official

Worst kept marketing secret becomes official chip announcement.

The worst kept secret in the industry shocked absolutely no one when it was stealthily announced on Intel's consumer branding site by Intel VP and Corporate Marketing Director, Deborah Conrad.

The names "Core i3" and "Core i5" will now be met with nods of acknowledgement by hordes of Intelloids around the world instead of the quizzical empty gaze of I-know-nothingness with which such terms were greeted since the launch of Core i7.

Intel has posted a video of Conrad explaining how over the last few years the company has, on occasion, confused consumers with too many chip offerings and how slimming down Intel's product portfolio would help consumers with their buying decisions.

According to the chipmaker's master plan, Intel will begin swatting away its Core 2 Duo and Quad models for good over the next few months.

It will be replacing the mainstream processors with the Core i3 and Core i5 brands but keeping, however, the venerable Pentium and Celeron brands alive, too. The business oriented vPro Core i5 and vPro Core i7 monikers will also see the light of day during the course of 2010 as well.

There's nothing really new in all this. By re-inventing the wheel and using a branding numerology similar to what it had in the post-Pentium 4 era, with the Pentium D 3xx, 5xx and 7xx, Intel will leave itself some marketing headroom for the all too predictable i4, i6 and i8 processor families.

Intel had already introduced a 5-star chip model rating system this Spring, intended to give us an idea of how fully-featured a particular processor model is, so in a not so simple way, it has added yet another dimension to the confusion. Yet we're sure you'll still be able tell your Core i5 from your Core 2 Quad.

These are name changes for the better though, to many people get confused with intels marketing thinking a lower clocked quad core is better for them than a higher clocked dual core. Also it will them keep their new chips the i5's and i7's more distinguished and this will allow people to know if I buy an i5 920 then I am getting middle of the range performance or if I buy an i7 950 I will be nearly at the pinnacle of current CPU performance.

Or is that core 2 duo's and Quads are old technology and people are going for the i7's because their the latest processor?

The more cynical among us would think it was just a marketing ploy to keep the old technology moving out the door.

Cool!,

I cant wait to buy my Core4 duo quad i7005!

What a farse. they should just have 8 chips.
Budget to avg. 1-3 avg (dual core) avg. to enthusiast 4-5. (high end dual core to multi core).
and Extreme 2 offerings. dual core with unlocked multi, and multi core with unlocked multi.

then if necessary flesh it out a little between these sub categories.
Thats my thoughts anyway.

"edit" that should be avg. to enthusiast 4-6 chips in range.

Why not just develop one chip to rule them all?

On the positive side (maybe) at least their keeping the LGA-775 socket CPU's alive and in production. At least I can live in the hope of new, higher spec chips for this socket being released later!

Yeah Sher Kahn that's a nice hope. But this is Intel were talking about. Seeing as they are now keeping 775 around, they will make new chipsets that will most likely not support the older Core2's or even recognise them.

Also nesquick, 2010 is the year of Power7 from IBM, which will be the one to rule them all.

@ core 2 chips not working in a new 775 chipset.. thatd be lol worthy.
really doubt theyll bother bother making a new chipset regardless.

also related, lol'd at a guy on OCAU forums who was frustrated at having just bought a 9 series quad, and now he will have "upgrade" to a core i3..

intels marketing shenadigans really *has* worked

I still think people are liking this to much to Nvidia's naming schemes where by they were trying to disguise the exact same product as a higher performing one. Intel is trying to make things simpler for its customers and retail partners by having 3 steps of performance I don't see why everyone is so worked up about it, if some names change then so be it, its not the end of the world.
