DX11 is AMD's weapon

AMD draws up its battle lines against Nvidia.

DX11 will be the biggest step of the decade for graphics, AMD's Rick Bergman told us recently.

Bergman, AMD's SVP for platforms told us one would have to go back to DX9 to see a comparable jump in terms of wow-factor for engineers and game developers, which is part of the reason the firm is pushing so hard to be first to market with DX11-ready hardware.

Bergman rejected the INQ's claim that only a minimal amount of game titles this year would take advantage of DX11, saying he knew of four to five ISVs working "eagerly" to churn out games and remarking he'd seen "great progress."

"We want to supply hardware to Microsoft and software developers so they can make DX11 games on our hardware first," Bergman told us, adding that it would put his firm in a good position for the future.

Being first would also put AMD ahead of Nvidia, something the c0mpany has wanted ever since the green GPU maker pipped it to the post with the DX10 API. "We were kind of fighting from behind, but with DX11 it feels like we're ahead this round," Bergman told us.

It certainly is interesting to see AMD putting most of its energy into DX11 leadership while Nvidia focuses maniacally on GP-GPU with its C for Cuda and Open CL. So even though NV will likely be behind ATI in DX11, ATI lags behind NV in the GP-GPU battle, which is not insignificant in the slightest.

The lines have been drawn and now it is left to the customer to ultimately decide who's approach is right.

Game on then!

I don't know if chasing the GPGPU is such a wise move since most people buy graphics cards for games not to run a filter better on photoshop, however there is a market for that kind of thing also.

doesnt dx11 bring some type of gpgpu ability itself, through the computer shader?

and seeing as MS makes directx, this is more likely to be supported in their OS?

in that case, amd might not be that far behind (if at all - if nvidias tech doesnt get utilised i mean)

DX10s proximity with Vista hurt it.

DX11 will (hopefully) be a big Win7 thing, which from the sound of all the happy Win7 Beta users can only be good.

So does this mean if I buy a dx10 graphics card now (along with an i7 system) that I run the risk of not being able to play any games coming out at the end of the year?
Will current mobo's even fit dx11 cards?

Why are people still building dx10 based machines when dx10 is only going to last another 6/8 months?

I was about to buy an i7 dx10 based system as an upgrade from socket 478, but I might wait abit now. It's all to much, total bollocks.

Cydonia7 - DX11 vid cards will still be running on Pci express as the current range of cards. Notrhing will change there. And also there are no Dx 11 games coming out in the near future anyway. And I guarrantee that if you buy a good card now it will play thos eearly DX 11 games anyway.

So do not put off buying now just coz of dx 11. Tech is always changing. If you get good gera now it will last you for quite some time.
