Windows 7 pricing announced

Find out what keeping on the bleeding edge of OS technology will cost you.

We've always said we'll give up Windows XP when you pry it form our cold, dead bleeding hands, but early reports and experiences with Windows 7 suggest that Microsoft's new operating system is - shock-bloody-horror - good!

And now we've found out upgrades and the full OS is going to cost.

Home Premium will set you back $199 for an upgrade, and $299 for the full version. Professional is $399 for an upgrade, $449 at retail, while the super-duper Premium edition of Windows 7 is $429 for an upgrade, or $469 retail.

Further, Microsoft's announced that all purchases of the current version of Windows (Premium, Business or Ulitmate PC) made between now and 7's launch on the 22nd of October can upgrade of "little or no cost".

So there you go.

I hear there is a offer for people in the US to get either the home premium or Professional upgrades for 50% off if they preorder.

That's a lot of money for unclean glass and no words on your taskbar.

So I wonder if the Upgrade version can still be used to do a full clean install via the same little trick by which you can do that with Vista.

I personally believe that MS have shot themselves in the foot with this pricing structure.

I wonder if there's discounts by upgrading digitally.

That's such shit .. Those figures are 30% more than the US (exchange rate adjusted) prices. IMO the pre-order pricing in the US is reasonable but I haven't seen any info of it being available in Aus :(

I was expecting something much more competitive especially after Apple announced an upgrade price of $29(US) for Snow Leopard - which is a pretty major revision.

If this is the real successor to Windows XP, as apparently my Vista is a hatchet job, do Vista owners get a discount? As a kind of... Expansion Pack????

screw that. ill stick with my vista HP x64 then. if i change OS, itll be to ubuntu or something (and it would be dual boot)

maybe if prices drop, or when sp2 is out ill migrate - unless theres a very compelling reason to switch. im not seeing any sofar though

I've recently started buying things from the US and getting it delivered to a mate, then sent here. They test it for me, and it works out so much cheaper even after all the shipping costs etc.

Best thing is Paypal, coz it's much cheaper than doing a bank transfer.

Im sure MS make most of there money from Enterprise sales to universities and big business. Thats why vista sucked so much for them from a sale point of view.

At least at my father in laws work (university of Norway) they skipped vista and have layed out plans to roll out windows 7 on all the machines upon release (ill get a copy for free too ;)). The university is nationwide so imagine how much money they will make from them! Thats alot of PC's.

I said it in the other Windows 7 thread: WHY oh WHY aren't they going the Apple "one OS, that's it, nice and simple" approach? Just plain "Windows 7" sounds SO MUCH BETTER (and distances them further from XP) than "Home Premium 64bit edition"

This is boxed product pricing. Theres no way any atomican is going to buy anything other than OEM.

OEM pricing will be very much in line with current Vista Pricing to encourage uptake.

I like Windows 7 and I think that these prices are quite expected for a new OS, even if it is just a "Vista 2.0". However I have recently done a fresh install of Vista Ultimate X64, chucked on SP2, and now it runs faster then it ever has... it's really snappy and perky and just feels ready for anything... all the time. So for me right now, Win7 isn't an option. I may adopt later when the first service pack arrives... prices will be cheaper then too.
