The Hobbit to start shooting in March

The road to Middle Earth has been mapped out, as The Hobbit starts its year-long shoot next March...

As pre-production continues, Guillermo del Toro has given an interview to New Zealand tourist reps, reports AceShowbiz, where he's given some firmer clues as to the production of the two Hobbit films that are occupying his time.

Shooting will commence in March 2010, and he's revealed that it'll continue for around 370 days. Once all the film is in the proverbial can, there's a lengthy post production process to work through, and that will mean that The Hobbit Part I will be released at the end of 2011, with The Hobbit Part II the following year.

The full story can be found here.

It goes without saying, of course, that we're really quite looking forward to these films. A lot...

Huh... for some reason, I thought they'd already started shooting.

Be very interesting to see what Guillermo and a few $hundred million can some up with.

I always found "The Hobbit" to be a far more enjoyable book to read with a tighter and more cohesive story than LOTR offered (although "The Hobbit" *was* aimed at a younger audience, wasn't it?)

Anyhow...good story, del Toro, fuck-tonne of cash, del Toro, picturesque New Zealand and del Toro.

Should kick-arse.

"The Devil's Backbone".

"Pan's Labyrinth".

Watch.

If you don't think he can do it after watching them you've got rocks in your head.

And Hellboy, which I love absolutely. But yeah, do watch Pan's Labyrinth. It's totally awesome in its own right, but it also serves as an excellent indicator of just how perfect del Toro is for The Hobbit.

I too love Hellboy (and II, even the drunk-singing scene!) but it's a far more cartoony style than The Hobbit would call for (which is why I didn't point it out).

And if he doesn't use Ron Perlman (or at least his voice) as one of the trolls, I'll be VERY put out!
