Video: Check out the real-world military action in ArmA II.

ArmA II is out now, but thanks to a cracked disc in our review code we're still waiting to get some time with this very exciting looking game. A few mates have already told us we have to get into the game, and the fledgling warstories that ArmA II is generating is certainly getting us anxious about getting some new discs...

In the meantime, there's this video to keep me looking forward to this new military sim.

It shows off a range of theatres and engagements, from parachute insertions by US Marines to armoured engagements featuring Russian tanks and M1 Abrams MBTs. You know, all the cool stuff you'd expect from a game that looks set to give Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising a run for its money!

And it sounds awesome - those rifle cracks put you right into the game! ArmA II is out now on PC. Yeah, just PC. Boo-YAH.

I've been playing this online (demo only though) with a few of those mates, it's great fun!

I'm certain I've seen parachute insertions on the "High Altitude Hos #11" DVD.

... From what I heard, in the first ArmA you'd get pwned by an enemy with a pistol whilst you tried in vain to hide in the grass with a sniper rifle hundreds of metres away.

When will grass-as-cover actually cover you from AI? We've been waiting YEARS for this, amongst other things that'll make AI more like a human opponent.

I think you mean grass as concealment rather than cover, but I know what you mean :)

I remember playing Battlefield Vietnam, which had really heavy grass sprites, and watching snipers try to hide in it. Problem was, the view distance on the grass was kinda short, so really, all it looked was that a nice obliging sniper shimmying down a hillside, exposed to all the world.

I miss that game...

Joint Operations Typhoon Rising had a good simulation of grass cover. Even though you could not see grass at distance the game would still make you slightly invisible to other players to simulate cover.

I heard the game is poorly optimized. Looks good on paper and fun to watching those videos.

Ive been playing the early German download. (also dvd ordered local Aust.:) release which is going ok now with the 1.02 patch and it will require more patchs but thats normal for this type of pc only game. Theres plenty of info in the official BIS ArmA 2 forums.

Suits mature type players who love boredom and hard times !

I have the German Download as well with the latest patch and this game runs sooo bad, i love flashpoint and ive been waiting for this to come out for years! But its so buggy like the first ARMA, ive got a i7 920, 6GB RAM, GTX295 and this game still runs crap! maybe bohemia should finish a game before its released? lol

Yeah, tried to get it running last night - looks fine, but my interface won't load! Kinda makes the game a little... USELESS.

For SLI/Crossfire users: try using the -winxp command line switch when running the game. Apparently it improves multi-GPU performance. I've noticed it somewhat.

@Hawkeye: Is it the menu UI that's missing or the ingame HUD? If ingame, check your difficulty settings; if you set it high enough it disables portions of the ingame UI.

Game runs fine for me, hitting 60 FPS in most parts (E8500@4GHz, 4870x2, Win7x64) and around 30 with some occasional streaming lag in the larger urban areas.

Online play is very laggy, it seems the desync comes from server-side lag, at least that's what everyone's been saying. The slow pace offsets the problem this creates though.

Unfortunately the campaign is pretty bugged.

R4nd0M, it's the in-game HUD, including things like the map and stuff, which the turorial keeps referring too. I thought it might be difficulty, though - I set the game to Veteran; I'll switch that down tonight.

Thanks!
