AMD's RS880 chipset performs like 6800GT

AMD platforms get a better IGP and a tasty speed boost.

AMD's current 790G chipset comes with a pretty decent IGP built in, which performs roughly the same as a HD3200, but finally they're getting an upgrade - in the form of the RS880.

It's most likely still going to be a 55nm chipset, but will come with a HD4200 built in - equivalent to the 6800GT from NVIDIA.

This isn't a huge amount of speed by any measure, but any increase is an increase and it's a welcome change to see IGPs finally getting slightly closer to having some decent gaming capability.

Head over to Techpowerup to read a little more, and fingers crossed this new chipset gives AMD a bit of an edge over current behemoth Intel.

So long as it does HD video and can run a couple not-tiny monitors, real-world users of this should be happy.

6800gt performance will afford some modest gaming to some users. Could be a nice option for the 7< kid market.

Just a minor correction, 780/790G and RS88- are 55nm not 65. :)

Still this is all good for AMD, as Manufacturers will find it appealing to have budget system's with decent graphics at lower prices. This little beauty will further solidify AMD's budget excellence, and prove that they're still fighting the fight.
