Essential Linkage: The fourth and final C&C game set to hit shores next year.

Command and Conquer is one of the main staples of the RTS scene, and while it's not always serious (at times being incredibly whimsical), that doesn't mean that it's a bad series.

Well we loved Command and Conquer 3, but the fourth installment of the game is set to return by 2010 to rock our socks off once more, bringing in a conclusion to the long-running story arc.

Still pitting the Brotherhood of NOD and GDI against one another, it takes place just after the end of C&C3 where we'll get a new campaign for each side as well as coop modes.

Perhaps cooler is that the multiplayer part has also been upped to a 5v5 setup, meaning ten hardcore players can duke it out with all the usual flaming NOD and high-tech GDI units.

There's also a few new features added into the game:

Introducing new class-based gameplay, mobile bases and persistent player progression throughout all game modes, Command & Conquer 4 offers players new, innovative and compelling strategic depth.

Best of all this is going to be a PC-exclusive release - if you enjoyed the C&C3 on Xbox 360 then you're gonna be left in the cold - for the rest of us this is great news.

Head over to VG247 to grab a little more detail about the game, and keep eyes peeled for when the cinematic trailer hits the official site on July 23rd 2009.

The first C&C was good, the second alrightish. I didn't enjoy the third much but eh...we'll see. Of course, I WAS only playing the demo of C&C:3 but it didn't strike me as particularly fun or challenging.

haven't played CnC since EA screwed us all over with Generals support (or lack thereof).

Haven't been able to take any other "RTS" game seriously since Supreme Commander and the expansion, TBH.

"persistent player progression"
"class-based gameplay"
Oh dear. They just stuffed up the oldest RTS franchise in history.

They are trying to do a Generals type thing here, all we can do is wait and see if this unfolds for the better.

I've always loved this series. I just HOPE they don't do anything like Generals.

C&C's strengths are its story and its fun tech and its simplicity and its *cutscenes*.

The very first C&C was the first EVER strategy game i played on the computer and i loved it to death. C&C 3 from EA was quite good although kanes wrath was crap.

I hated generals it was too political for me in the sense of the Arabs vs the Good guys (america).

Red alert was also a favorite as well as Red alert 3 both are good games although RA3 was of course EA'd up!

Looking forward to this new addition!

I dont know why so many are hating on Generals? It was not a classic C+C game so it shouldnt be compared. But as it is Generals was/is an excellent RTS that for its time really pushed the boundaries in many ways. I felt that it was progressive. And had just the right amount of controversy around it so that it was relevant.

I thouroughly enjoyed it.

C+C 3 was a big letdown. Boring, repetitive gameplay that felt uninspired. Its gameplay style has dated horribly.
