Intel Core i5 details leak through

Core i5 sounds interesting on paper...

Intel's current highend Core i7 chips look to be not quite replaced, but rather detracted from, given the launch of Intel's next midrange Core i5 chips.

The CPUs appear to be quite affordable, thanks to some new information leaked through the interweb sieve that we suggest you take with one large grain of salt - but rumours have proven true in the past.

A table over at TweakTown shows a lowend Core i5-750 processor with a base speed of 2.66GHz, 8MB of L3 cache and support for DDR3, but interestingly has a Turbo Boost speed of up to 3.2GHz, much more than the current 1x multi increase of the Core i7.

This is probably attributed to the much lower TDP of 95W, and the price also seems low at US$196. If this lowend CPU can rocket as fast as the Core i7 920 can, there's every reason to suggest this will be a great overclocking chip.

There's also information on two other other chips there, and while they're all due for release on September 9th this year we can also see two more chips for next year; albeit lower-powered versions with low TDPs.

Check the table of Core i5 chips below courtesy of TweakTown and post below with your thoughts - can these be the actual specs of the chips?

Turbo boost is going to be intel's crown and glory I think and make it much more competitive than any Phenom II.

I refuse to read into i5 anymore, seeing as my i7 920 is sitting waiting to be shipped to me. Ignorance will be my bliss.

stash thats the way to go lol. but really depending on how deep your pockets are or how long, short your arms are there will be a lot of resonably priced x2 or x4 cpus to choose from.. phenom 2 great value really and the only reason intels prices drop

AMD need to bring out Rev.D 'Hydra' and bring it out now. The bulk process will bring up the clock rate and reduce power consumption... turning the PII into an awesome overclocker. If I worked at AMD, I would be worried right now.

I think the i5's are really going to give amd a run for their money in value. They're either going to need to drop their prices or bring out a new platform or cpu that can perform aswell and stay in the same market price. Or hope for good profit on fanboy sales. :P

I just upgraded to an i7 920 and i was well aware of the i5's. I still think the 920 will out perform what is to come in many aspects. But we will just have to wait and see.

You know Core i5 doesn't use LGA1366, right?

For the first time since... Pentium Pro I think... the desktop and performance sectors will have different sockets.
