Bryan Singer circling Battlestar Galactica movie?

Could Battlestar Galactica be heading to the big screen, with Bryan Singer on board? And just how would that work?

Now here's the kind of story where you might, if you share anywhere near our level of love for Battlestar Galactica, need to sit down.

With the screening of the TV movie The Plan later this year, it seems that'll be it for Ronald D Moore's amazing Battlestar Galactica adventures, save for the prequel series, Caprica, which gets going early next year. But what's this? It seems a movie version could be on the way, and reports suggest that Bryan Singer might be the man to bring it to the big screen.

It's not the first time that Singer has been involved with Battlestar Galactica. Back in 2001, it was he who was developing a new version of the show, in conjunction with Tom De Santo, that was ultimately canned in the wake of the September 11th attacks. They were but a few months away from shooting a pilot episode for the show, but it turned out not to be, and, of course, three years later in came Ronald D Moore and David Eick, and you know the story from there.

While never reaching mass audience levels of attention, the revived Battlestar Galactica nevertheless deservedly attracted an immense amount of critical acclaim and earned a solid base audience. As such, Universal Pictures did a deal earlier in the year to develop a Battlestar Galactica movie. And now, according to Hitfix.com, it seems that Bryan Singer has been approached to produce, with an eye to directing the film.

The problem to our eye, though, keen as we are to see BSG on the big screen, is that Moore's take on the property didn't really leave a lot of room to explore, that the story arc was very much complete. You'd have to assume that it'd have to involve the cast of the recent version, as opposed to starting again from scratch, but what else - short of digging up new side stories - is there actually left to explore? We're sure there are answers to that, just less sure that those answers are particularly compelling.

The other question mark is whether Ronald Moore would be involved on any level? Granted, these are all speculative questions right now, but Universal has some tough conundrums to resolve if it does ultimately decide to press the green light button.

But heck, Battlestar on the big screen? You'd better believe we'll be first in line...

Those 2 Baseships that were at the Colony before it was destroyed; where did they go?

And what of the friendly Cylons sent on their way with their own fully operational Base Star?

And, did Helo *really* drive the Galactica and the fleet into the Sun -- or turn around half way and thought "fuckit, I'm a starship, I'm gonna see the universe" (after, of course fixing the Galactica so it can handle jumps again, he'd do that with a nanobot army he'd create out of spare parts. He's a starship.) Or jimmy up a new starship using fleet and Galactica parts.

Or, it could focus on Kara in her angel world. the whole screen would be white. Nothing visible for 90 minutes. But it'd be like "there's Starbuck, hanging out with God. They're white energy beings."

Or it could be the Galactica crew mating with the primitives, and a bit about how Baltar's farming is coming along...

I think you'll find it was actually Samuel Anders that was driving the fleet in to the sun...

Sam's hardcore.
"Fuck this shit, I'm going to the sun."

You guys are thinking to short-term. What happened to the crew and civilians of the Olympic Carrier that Apollo blew the crap out of at the start of the series?
They're still around. I bet you every dollar I have. All fourteen of them.

I'd kind of like to imagine something like Razer. That was awesome, if a little... bleak. But you could even do the First Cylon War!

Leave the story finished where it was. That said they were wandering around the universe for a few years prior to that, plenty of tales to tell that the TV series didn't cover.

A prequel with the first Cylon war would also be very entertaining.

You just have to remember the golden rule of BSG. It just isn't Battlestar Galactica without the Galactica. Great news none the less.

Following the Galatica through the First Cylon war would be pretty cool.

It'd kinda have to be the first Cylon war - the Galactica was trashed by the end of the series and Caprica has really rounded off the finished arcs there.

Would be great, actually, as people who were previously unaware of the TV show can be wowed by the movie and then get really sucked in by the DVDs - similar to the Firefly/Serenity situation.

I really need to get around to watching the second half of season 4...I really had to force myself to that point too.

Really lost interest in the second half of S3 and it felt like a real slog to get much further. Just felt really...erratic.

Does it come together at the end satisfyingly? I've heard mixed things about he finale...

Agreed that Season 3 was a bit ... off, and seems erratic. However S4 starts really bringing all those pieces together, and I have to admit that I was a bawling mess more than once during the second half of S4.

Granted, I LOVE these characters (incl. the Galactica) to the point of almost-fanboiism. But look - if you've come this far you really ought to finish it.

Yeah S4 > S3. Things start getting tied up and the ending is nice. Though I'm not sure all the outstanding questions were answered.

This is what "Caprica" is going to be. Check out the pilot episode.

Caprica will be different drama than BSG based on the info about it and the pilot. We might see the first Cylon war, we might not.

Either way a movie treatment of the war can't be a bad thing.

I agree. I think it will be a re-imaging of the first Cylon War - that's what people would be more familiar with I expect ... well, the weirdos that have never watched and enjoyed the new series anyway. ;-D

I think he will do a "reboot" of the series - maybe have links between 70's TV series and current be it story line or back story? A reboot will be bad for BSG fans of the current series (including me)

Id be all for it... IF it was the same BSG... not "a complete reimagination" and same actors and style.

Why the FUCK must these cunts ruin these franchises when they do something like this thats more or less completely unrelated.

It's like when they called Dragon Ball Evolution Dragon Ball.

So they can peddle mid-mid high budget low grade trash that would otherwise turn a net loss if they slap a name with brand power on it?

Those fuckers.

You can make your movie, but dont call it something it's fucking not.
