Take that Intel! Take that Nvidia!
Intel rival AMD claims it has finally managed to become number one somewhere in the chip market.
In a statement the outfit said it's taken first place in the discrete graphics market, with more than 53 per cent market share.
The reason apparently is that the ATI HD 4000 line is selling like hotcakes, particularly the Radeon HD 4530 and Radeon HD 4670 that support DirectX 10.1.
For those who came in late 'discrete' means that the GPU is not integrated with the chipset that controls motherboard functions.
Intel is probably still the overall leader if integrated graphics are also taken into account, but hey let's not rain on AMD's parade.
Jon Peddie, founder and principal, Jon Peddie Research said that as consumers want better visual computing capabilities in their notebooks, the market for discrete graphics is only expected to grow.
"The increase in volume in the second quarter of this year, and in AMD's mobile discrete market share, is a testament to consumers' appetite for visual computing, and manufacturers' readiness to satisfy it as we move into what has traditionally been the busiest season of the year," he said.
It's just as well that AMD bought ATI then.
