Lenovo moves into the home server market

Everyone wants one, right?

PC Maker Lenovo has decided to enter what it calls the "digital lifestyle" market with four new desktops and one laptop.

This apparently is just an opening salvo in Lenovo's cunning plan to flog home theatre PCs and home servers.

The IdeaCentre Q700 is a home theatre PC that's paired with the IdeaCentre D400, the company's first Windows Home Server box. Both will give you a penny change from $US500.

The company has also released two Atom-based nettops, the Q100 and Q110, which will be priced at $US249 and $US349 respectively. Oh, and there is a U450p notebook, which will be priced at $US799.

All of these are designed to slot Lenovo into the home entertainment business that IBM pulled out of years ago.

The Q700 is powered by an Intel 5200 Core Duo processor and comes with a choice of 320G, 500G or 640GB hard drives. It has 4GB of non-upgradable memory and graphics are powered by an Intel GMA X5400. It also sports eight USB ports, plus an eSATA port for external hard drives.

The unit ships with Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g WiFi. A TV tuner is optional, but sadly Windows Vista Home Premium 64 is not.

Is it even going to be available in Australia, everyone else gave WHS in the Aus/NZ market the big thumbs down.

graphics are powered by an Intel GMA X5400... "shudders"

when a geforce 8400GS is under $30 why even bother going with integrated graphics!!!

Entertainment my ass.. bout the only thing entertaining about this is how much it will fail when u try and pump some seriously high res digital video!

Isn't that the point of an "Entertainment PC?"

I don't see where they call it an "Entertainment PC". It's a server, it doesn't need anything more than integrated graphics.

no, they listed two desktops, the Q700 and D400
Q700 = HTPC
D400 = Home Server.
Then after all that, they didn't even list the specs for the D400... lame

Cyb3r It says it's a home theatre PC, which is pretty much an Entertainment PC.

Nice price, but that wouldnt be sufficient to handle 1920x1080 video, would it?

Also, the graphics is the GMA X4500, there is no GMA X5400.
Don't you love the inquirer?

Ok, well, based on that spec, I want one.

The only niggling worry is whether it would be reliable.

I remember Lenovo used to have lots of quality problems with their domestic PCs.

They didn't even mention a Blu Ray option, the Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop is still ahead in that respect.

That's good and all, but I will build my own thanks!
