Microsoft hits back at Sony by dropping the high end Xbox to sub-$450.

The Xbox 360 Elite is the prefered version of Microsoft's gaming console for any discerning console gamer. It's just become an even more attractive proposition, following today's announcement of a drop in price.

The Elite will now retail for $449 (though many retailers may well sell it for even less) from September 22. On top of the $100 price drop, anyone who buys an Elite between the price drop and October 20 will get a free copy of Halo 3: ODST.

The lower end Arcade version remains at $299, while the Pro will remain $399 - while stocks last, the release adds.

 Oddly enough, the Pro did drop in price in the states, but not here. I doubt the Pro will be long in the market, anyway.

 Damn, just bought a pro, and while the Elite looks sweet, if i get one, i just know i'm going to feel obliged to replace all of my beige controllers & headsets to match it :(

 Haha, yeah 4 black controllers add up. I even ended up spray painting my media center controller black to match.

 hmm.

200 for their crappy 120gb drive.. or 450 for an elite, which would also give me HDMI, and a box for the bedroom.

80 for the HDD via Ebay..

 All new 360s come with HDMI - even the Arcades. The difference is in the included extras and colour: +60GB HDD, HD cables etc. for pro; +120GB HDD, HDMI cable (IIRC), black for Elite.

 this report seams to be off the mark. MS have said they dropping the price of the elite but removing the hdmi cable and stopping any bundles with it to do so. The arcade is also getting a price drop as as the pro. The pro will be dropped all together though so only remaining stock will be sold.

Oh and even at $449 the elite isnt better value than the $499 for the new PS3 slim which offers much more for the money.

 lain: that's purely subjective. I have had a PS3 since pretty much day one, and it's more or less gathered dust... Because the games on it are shit in my opinion.

So rather than making an unquantified statement, state it as your opinion, because that's all it is unless you back it up with solid, supporting evidence.
