Valve to remove ill-gotten hats from TF2

Naughty hats are idle playthings.

Team Fortress 2 is one of those games that keeps on giving through continual updates and frequent discounts, bringing plenty of new content for free and drawing gamers back like bugs to a zapper.

When they introduced the random weapon and hat drop system gamers weren't very pleased, some frustrated at the impossible-to-gague item drops and turning instead to 'idle' programs that would keep them in-server for hours, thereby giving them more unlocks.

Valve were naturally quite annoyed at these TF2 players who opted for the easy route, and in a very strange move have decided to erase all the ill-gotten items from the cheaters - as well as promising to remove all items if it continues:

Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process.

They're still working on item trading and crafting for now, but it's quite good to see those who attempted to thwart the system be given a kick in the pants - after all, the weapons are unlockable through achievements quite easily.

To reward all those who didn't cheat they've also sent a special hat to everyone, most players receiving a special angelic halo (however some were rewarded with any hat).

Head to the TF2 blog for a little bit more, and post below with weapon frustrations of your own.

keeping in mind that they weren't initally achievable with the achievements for the Sniper or Spy, because of the random drop system, so I can't really blame them.

Afaik the idling came in just after they fixed the achievement unlocks for those classes.

That said, I got my Huntsman after about ten hours of playing without any other unlocks, and I think I wet myself from excitement.

it's not the weapons that people were trying to get, it was the hats, which aren't available through achievements.

Saying that, I now have 1 hat and 1 halo.

I had the Spy and Sniper unlocks in the first few days too.

I want hats... bugger. Now it feels like WOW where I have to fight till my item drops, instead of just achieving stuff. I find items don't really make a huge difference to how I play and how I go.

Haven't played TF2 in ages - is it like WoW now where if you're not a regular you'll be outclassed just because you don't have cool gear? Or is it still actually fun for a casual player?

They items might change your tactics a little, but they all have their downsides.

E.G a heal gun that generates Uber 25% faster, and gives 100% crits. The down side? The uber has no invulnerability.

Or the Backburner that gives crits from behind, but removes the airblast that is handy for stickies/rockets ^-^

I do like how they've nerfed health instead of double jump for the Scout with the Sandman...I can't play without bouncing around everywhere D:

Is it just me, or is 'going forward' the new buzzword that companies just LOVE to use in a sentence?
