The Commodore 64 makes a surprising comeback

Fancy some old school C64 action? You can find it in a surprising new form...

Ah, the Commodore 64.

At the risk of showing my age, I was always jealous of kids who had one of these cutting edge machines. The games, the cool, the remarkable social pulling power of having mates over to play Aliens in gorgeous 8-bit colour. Oh, I would have sold my Lego collection and mint Star Wars toys in a job lot to have one.

Now, though, I can just download a C64 emulator for my iPhone. Here are the key features, according the site:

- Original Commodore 64 game graphics
- Original SID sound
- Auto-save, to continue exactly where you left off
- Realistic joystick and beautifully crafted C64 keyboard
- Portrait and Landscape play
- Vertical and Fullscreen gaming (auto rotate for iPod users)
- and much more...

Oh yes, at last, it shall be mine!

There's been a C64 emulator for ages for Nokia: http://koti.mbnet.fi/haviital/

Works pretty damn well, only caveat is that you need to donate any amount for sound (used to be 100% free). But the guy's been working on it for ages, so fair enough.

is it a C64 emulator, or is it software that plays games which look exactly like they did on the C64? Big difference, and wespec' if it's the former.

If it's the latter - PHAIL. "Retro games compliation" != impressive.

No, not a retro games compilation.

It boots C64 so you can do all your LOAD "*",8,1 (hard to type that on new keyboards!!) to your hearts content. You can then play as many games as you like without having to wait for someone else to release them...

Not yet available in the australian iTunes App Store...
The Fuzz damn you!

Actually, I believe this comes with a limited number of games, and you can only play those that are released for free or in-app purchase through the developer of this emulator.

So... sucks to that. I'll continue trying to get all those pesky puzzle pieces in Impossible Mission in VICE. That and Ghostbusters, of course.

Fucking awesome; almost a killer app.

In case you don't know, there already is an app for iPhones that's totally killer: http://trac2.assembla.com/iPhonePedia/wiki/FeaturesList

Made me want one.
