NVIDIA claims GT300 outperforms ATI 5800 series cards

NVIDIA reckons their cards are more powerful than a gorilla on steroids.

NVIDIA hit their stride powerfully when they released the G80 core many years ago, bringing us the 8800GTX that had more power than we knew what to do with (at the time), and also releasing cards such as the 8800GT, 9600GT and other derivatives that we've come to know and (mostly) love.

ATI caught up and in many ways are now in a better position than NVIDIA with their ultra-affordable performance cards in the 4800 series, with their 5800 series coming very shortly with performance that is going to change the entire scene again, supposedly trouncing the best that NVIDIA can currently muster.

NVIDIA have bounced back in the midst of the 5xxx series news to announce that their next series of cards are not going to be based on a redesigned GT200 core, but rather will be based on a completely new core architecture currently codenamed the GT300.

They're claiming that the GT300 has performance significantly higher than anything ATI and their RV870 core can manage, and that if they use two of them in their GX2 arrangement they'll take the top spot again as the fastest graphics card on the planet.

The launch for the GT300 is rumoured for late November, which places it just after the 5xxx series launch. While it's difficult to determine at this stage whether the performance claims are true, or if it's just NVIDIA attempting to take the wind out of ATI's sails, it's going to be interesting to find out who will take top spot - and we'll know for sure by Christmas.

Head over to Fudzilla to read more about the GT300, via TweakTown.

If they are going to claim stuff like that at least send out some samples for preliminary reviews to maybe backup what they are saying so it doesn't look like they are full of BS.

5% (artificial benchmark) performance difference won't matter if it comes at 1.5 times the price.

Also, I'll believe it when I see it.

That's right, personally I don't car if Nvidia pull out a 395GTX or some sort that beats ATI's 5870X2 coz the X2 will cost $600 while the nvidia card will probably cost closer to $1200 and the performance difference will be marginal. When Nvidia bring down their prices then they will be competative.

Haha they would say this
They are just trying to stop people buying ati cards when they first come out.

They want us holding off buying a new ATI card until they bring theirs out, which will most likely be much more expensive. As usual, I'll wait before I upgrade, until the prices have come down a bit and some real world scores are available , and also better drivers.

Exciting times with GT300 and HD5xxx going head2head.

They really shouldn't be allowed to make calls like that. It's obviously a bite to lower ati's sales.

IMO its all just crap until legitimate reviewers and actual public have the cards in there machines to be able to give some real world performance stats.
All this speculation and dodgy benchmarks with very limited or sketchy details is just a waste of reading time IMO.
But its going to be great to see some new cards filtering in.
I will be headed over to japan just after christmas so hopefully they might have some exciting tech as well :)

nvidia realise that having a faster card doesn't help if they can't produce it in any quantity, right?

likely to be released several months after the 5 series, maybe slightly faster, but no doubt it will be priced like the previous cards have been..
i know which cards ill be choosing - if i dont have a 5 series prior to the new 300s, ill be gettings one shortly after when ati drops the prices further to stay even more competive..
