One of the classic games of all time turns 25, and its creators celebrate in style.

Ah, Elite. I know I - and many of my friends - probably lost entire months to this gaming great. The wire-frame and later vector graphics hid a deep system of space flight simulation and economic modelling that was one of the most addictive games we've ever played.

Elite's now turned 25, and to celebrate, it's creators have launched a special site, with the following goal:

Join us to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Elite with a series of events, competitions and media. We have brand-new wallpapers, Elite midi music and screenshots in the Anniversary Media section. During the anniversary we're inviting you to chat to David Braben in a Twitter and Forums Q&A session, take part in contests and read others' fond memories of the Elite universe - and we'd love to hear your own, whether they are ‘mostly harmless' or ‘dangerous'...

In addition to the video and contests, theirs some super cool wallpapers, a mess of classic screenshots, and much more. If you've never heard of Elite, it's time to catch up on an important part of PC gaming history.

I had the priviledge to play the original BBC micro version back in the day. Still play it occasionally on my Beeb now. Fantastic game, way ahead of it's time, often copied, never beaten.

Unless Ian Bell's involved, it might be more accurate to say, "and one of its creators celebrates in style".

Watched my uncle play Elite and was absolutely wowed. So far ahead of its time - later on I sank countless hours into Elite II: Frontier when it blew my mind again.
