Apple prefer environment to profits

Get annoyed at US Chamber of Commerce.

Fruit themed gadget maker Apple has apparently walked out of the US Chamber of Commerce because of its medieval global warming policy.

According to Reuters, Apple is miffed at the Chamber of Commerce over its environmental policy.

This apparently involves paying scientists to oppose the notion of man-made global warming, which Apple seems to think is real.

Apple said, "We would prefer that the chamber take a more progressive stance on this critical issue and play a constructive role in addressing the climate crisis."

Catherine Novelli, a vice president of government affairs at Apple resigned its membership in the business group "effective immediately".

Apple joined three big power utilities, Exelon Corp, PG&E Corp and PNM Resources Inc, which said they were leaving the chamber over the group's stance on climate change.

There is a feeling that while the chamber's members are okay with tackling global warming, the group is still trapped in its 1960's view that the environment is less important than profits.

The chamber said in a statement that it favors "mainstream, common sense views" on climate change but opposed a climate bill that the House of Representatives narrowly passed in June.

Apple has been peddling itself as a green computer outfit as part of marketing itself as cool, hip and elite, even if Greenpeace feels it is not doing enough.

We guess that by making a statement such as this, Apple might hope to get back on Greenpeace's Christmas card list.

Moar marketing for Apple - carefully failing to point out that "commonsense and mainstream" != "accurate and scientific"

i dont think global warming is real...
Humans are destroying the world on a larger scale than before. But the world climate changes alot.. we had a very mini ice age 300 old years ago..

( that is why i hate Krud and his backward ETS scheme. Wiat and see when power goes up a furthur 40 per cent and other things like that. And china , india take all our manufacturing stuff cause they don't give a fuck)..Said.

Ill reiterate my comment that got lost now here in response to Trekker's comments.

Firstly, and this is an affirmative to trekker's comment, there is no definate concensus amongst scientific community that global warming is occuring due to humankind's activities. There are still too many variables to properly say that any effort now would either be futile or not. That said, however, we could be making an effort to making a cleaner, better world.

Second, if global warming is occuring, there is more that can be done than simply quoting rhetoric thats already out there. At the moment, our power generation facilities are almost all use fossil fuels. No viable alternatives have yet been found to generate the sort of power that we require and those that we do currently use, have been a sourse of consternation amongst the local populus where those facilities are located(nuclear power stations not included). Its obvious that we have to find alternative power generation capablities before we even think about going green.

Thirdyly, the economy. Now, I can say very safely that if you change something on a grand scale right this instant, society would be up in arms. This would mainly come from mainstream population, the typical family with 2.6 children, a house, 2 cars, a cat and a dog. Now they feel that their problems pale in comparison to global warming or rather it doesnt factor in their day to month to year decisions. As far as they are concerned, the less they are affected, the better. So, even before we start saying "save the planet" to them, we have to have alternatives for these people to use. Cars, power generations facilities and so on. The uptake on lower capacity cars will show you that the typical family doesnt usually have one.

Fourthly, alternatives. Where are they? Cars? Well, we do have hydrogen cars on the market at the moment in California, as far as I know. However, it is still a long way away from being mainstream. It is still a decade away before there is the hydrogen distribution infratructure in place to service that use. How about power plants? At the moment, there arent any alternatives that we are happy with. Apart from the work done at CERN and some other places, there isnt much money spent anywhere else, by any country, for R&D towards alternative power generation capabilites.

To conclude, Apple is wise not to get involved with the environmental scene at all. If it does, it could donate funds to research facilities. In fact, it could go one further and make its operations, including its staff, greener. But it wont. Apple is just using the buzz around right now as a marketing ploy and isnt against the law. Threats like that dont really do anybody any good, except for Apple of course :P
