Australia to host world’s largest games event -- World Cyber Games 2004

Sydney Australia, (July 19, 2004) Australia's best gamers prepare to participate in World Cyber Games, the world’s largest PC and console games festival with over 50 countries participating worldwide. With the World Cyber Games (WCG) now in its fourth year running, Australian gamers will be vying for the ticket to San Francisco, host city for the WCG 2004 World Finals.

With elimination tournaments to be held throughout Australia in August 2004, each participating gamer and their teams must first prove themselves worthy to come to the Australian finals culminating at Sydney's Luna Park on September 18-19, 2004.

The World Cyber Games Committee, based in Korea, has announced a total of 6 PC Games and 2 Consoles games to be played this year.

PC Platform

1) StarCraft: Brood War -- (Real-Time Strategy Game)

2) Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne -- (Real-Time Strategy Game)

3) Counter Strike: Condition Zero -- (First Person Shooter)

4) Unreal Tournament 2004 -- (First Person Shooter)

5) FIFA 2004 -- (Soccer Simulator)

6) Need for Speed: Underground -- (Urban Racing Simulator)

Console

1) Halo (Xbox) -- (First Person Shooter)

2) Project Gotham Racing 2 (Xbox) -- (Urban Racing Simulator)

'Last year's WCG Australian Finals were held at Sydney's Darling Harbour Convention Centre and attracted over 1000 spectators. This year we aim to make it even bigger, better and available to gamers of all ages' said Russell Hanna from Network & Event Media, WCG Strategic Partner for Australia. 'The message we want to reach the Australian public is that WCG is the "Olympics" for Gamers and like the Olympics we strive to promote the unity and pride to represent ones country at the World Cyber Games World Finals in San Francisco, October 6-10, 2004.'

Like the Olympics, the WCG Australian Finals will have a festive atmosphere broadening its appeal to the wider audience. With free give aways, a build your own computer competition as well as a trade expo of the latest gadgets, IT products and offerings from games industry will compliment this years WCG events program at Sydney's Luna Park.

Announcements on match seeds, game rules, and details on national preliminary formats are now available at WCG's official Australian Website located at www.worldcybergames.com.au. The WCG Australia preliminaries will kick off on July 23 with the official selection of the venues and tournament results regularly updated on the web site.

About World Cyber Games

Held on an annual basis ever since 2000, the World Cyber Games has continued to set the standard in global game competitions as well as providing comprehensive and fun game-related content to the world. Since WCG Challenge started, WCG has broken the language barrier, created games the second common language for the world after sports.

WCG is the global game video and computer game tournament that over 1 million gamers around the world participate to compete in the annual grand final hosted by major cities of the world. Since the 1st WCG in 2000 to be the largest game tournament in the world in terms of US$2.5 million prizes, number of official events, number of players (600,000 in 2003) and participating countries (52 in 2003).

The first WCG Challenge was held in 2000 as the vanguard of cyber tournaments. Inherited spirit of WCG Challenge, WCG Committee had held the first WCG in December, 2001. Since WCG 2001, WCG Grand Final has been growing in scale. In 2003, WCG held the third WCG Grand Final in Seoul with the slogan of 'Beyond the game'.
