Star Trek sequel news round-up

There’s been lots of chatter about the next Star Trek film over the past week or two. Here’s our round-up of everything we’ve found out...

With JJ Abrams' staggeringly-successful reboot of the Star Trek franchise about to hit the home DVD and Blu-ray market, much talk has inevitably turned to the sequel, which Paramount is understood to be keen to release in just two years' time (although whether that happens remains to be seen).

And, over the past week or two,, some titbits and rumours have started to circulate surrounding the project. So here are the latest updates:

  • Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have been talking to Coming Soon mainly about the upcoming DVD release of Transformers 2, but the site snuck some Star Trek questions in there. The pair said they'd consider looking at Next Generation elements (the Borg, perhaps) for the next Star Trek film, although in Kurtzman's words, "I think our instinct would be to first look at the original series before we would consider that, but all of that would be on the table for us, it is on the table."
  • The pair also discussed the idea of doing the next two Star Trek films back to back. Again, in the words of Kurtzman, "It's not ‘Hey, let's do as many as possible.' But rather ‘Let's make sure that they are good' ... So, if the studio wants more than one, then great, but our thinking is going to be very much about the story." He didn't rule it out, though, adding: "Right now we are not thinking specifically about making two and three. It may come up but it's not where our heads are right now."
  • The pair have still not decided on precisely who to include, which leaves the speculation about Khan hanging in the air.
  • Meanwhile, JJ Abrams has been doing press too, and Coming Soon once more pressed him on whether his plans for the franchise were long term. "That's a wonderfully optimistic question and I appreciate that, but the answer is that it's obviously just movie-to-movie." the director replied.
  • Abrams has also confirmed that he's considering the idea of making Star Trek 2/12 (take your pick) as a 3D movie.
  • William Shatner's appearance in the next Trek film is far from a foregone conclusion. Abrams remains adamant that it makes it spectacularly hard to adhere to the canon of Star Trek, yet ignore the fact that Captain Kirk died on screen. Hence, don't expect William Shatner anytime soon, even though Abrams admits he's keen to work with him.
  • Don't rule out more Leonard Nimoy, though. Nimoy has commented last week that "Frankly, I doubt that I'll be called upon again. I think I was useful in this last film to help bridge the original characters and the new cast, but with the new cast in place, I'm sure they'll move ahead with that. I don't see at the moment why they would need me, but I wouldn't hesitate if they asked." Abrams, in an interview transcribed over at Collider, batted that back, though: "I can't imagine a Star Trek movie not needing him." However, he refused to be drawn on whether Nimoy would definitely be in the next movie.
  • In spite of Paramount's aim for the next Star Trek film to hit in 2011, the smarter money is on the year after. Abrams is also working on Mission: Impossible 4, and that may yet be a project that he chooses to direct. If he does, that'll wipe out most of next year and a good chunk of the year after too. We'd expect an announcement on that soon, though.

We'll, of course, keep you posted on future developments...

He didn't seem to care much about canon for the first movie... why worry about it now?

Guys... the film is an alternate history. It does not invalidate current Canon at all.

To get Shatner into it, he would have to come from the same timeline that Spock came from, which it has already been established will likely now not happen. So not only would we need more time-travel, we'd need some dimension jumping.

"Alternate History" is a cop out though...

Really, you could recreate the star wars movies, call it star trek, and say it's alternate history.

Well, no, 'cause the established Trek Canon is present in Abrams' film. That's where Spock comes from. It's also present during the opening five minutes. That's the established Canon too.

I really don't see why this is considered a cop-out. Creating an alternate is the entire point of the film!

Id have to agree with Hawkeye. Firstly, here's what we know. According to canon, Spock did go to Romulus to bring peace/reunification between the Vulcans and the Romulans. Where it differs is that Spock did go to the past in an effort to stop the Romulan sun from going supernova, or rather saving Romulus as Spock tells it.

Now, from canon, we dont know much about Kirk's and Spock's past. In fact, there is very little information about how they came to be, or rather how they got together in the first place. Who is to say that the appearence of said Romulan ship wasnt the catalyst? The only thing we know is that the planet Vulcan doesnt exist in the reboot's time line. And thats it. Sure, changing things in the past does affect the future but who's to say how much it changes the future?

The fact remains that the film does adhere, mostly, to the canon. It hasnt changed it much. As far as the film is concerned, Kirk is captain of the Enterprise, Spock is his number one and all the other officers are also there. From that point on who is to say that the past/future doesnt repeat itself? As a matter of fact, it does, apart from the intrusion of the Romulan ship and Spocks appearence in that time line. Kirk joins starfleet, beats the Kobayashi Maru no-win scenario, serves on Enterprise and although in the beginning it seemed that he wasnt going to be captain, in the end he does.

So, I dont see it as being a cop out as not much has changed, canon wise. Alternate history, it may be, but seriously it doesnt mess with the canon that much. Unless of course you want to include all the times where theyve used time travel to fix things? The exploration of the extra demensional time lines is just the next step, dont you think?

And here's some more canonical stuff.

We know from the original TOS pilot that Spock was in fact the First Officer of the Enterprise under Captain Pike, so that's correct.

We know from canon that George Kirk was James Kirk's inspiration for joining Starfleet; and without him as a guide, alternate Kirk becomes a no-good drifter.

Even strifus' point that Spock does go to Romulus isn't the whole story. He does so in DS9, I believe, but his mercy mission as shown in the new Trek is well after even that, so that's not changing established canon, but adding to it - Spock's belief in Romulus was a lifelong one.

Well they can release some of the older films now remixed excluding all references to Vulcan and Spock's Mother etc. More profit to make there. I'm not going to buy the last JJ Abrams Star trek film, as a stand alone it was enjoyable but if I watch it then watch a later set film, the time line problems will shine through here and there.
Nope purging the film from my mind, I'm damned if I'm buying new timeline adjusted series of the star trek films :P
