Infinity Ward says 'f**k you!' to PC gamers

Modern Warfare 2 set to be effectively neutered on PC.

We've all been looking forward to Modern Warfare 2's release later this year - after all, this is the game that topped as the number 1 action title of all time in the recent Hot 100 poll. But news out of the game's developer, Infinity Ward, over the weekend has PC fans raging.

The biggest gripe? No dedicated servers for MW2 on PC, which arguably kills dead the chance for any real competitive community to build around the game. Instead, the game will feature the IWnet service that both hosts matches itself, and matchmakes games to make sure you only play against similarly ranked players.

All this with the stated aim of essentially mirroring the console experience, to which we say, as PC fans, fuck you back, Infinity Ward.

Other changes coming in MW2 will also likely mean that third party modding - a PC staple that pretty much re-invented PC development in the last decade - will be impossible. Instead, IW has big plans for paid-for DLC.

It all leaves a very bad taste in my mouth, and makes me look forward to the release a lot less. What are your thoughts?

IW dropped about 1mil points on my respect meter when I heard about it.

I have no idea why they wouldn't include dedicated server support. Are developers really getting that lazy? By the sounds of it, this is going to be a complete port from consoles, now. If I wanted the console experience, i'd buy a fucking console.

I suppose they're just trying to make console owners not feel left out because they own inferior systems.

Bah....CoD4:MW Multi-player was ok, till the horde came in and brought the unsavoury individuals in too. Which made the online experience distasteful. I have pre-purchased the console edition. Mods make the PC versions stronger imo, if they lock it down, then pc gamers won't buy the game or go by a console version instead. Wondering if that will get ruined too?

Yup, a massive kick to the crotch. While I pray, I find it hard to believe the petition (80,000 and growing!) will do anything to change their minds.

Best way to get the message through is not getting the game. Cancel your preorder and don't pirate it, can't afford to give them the excuse.

What has got into game developers recently? Its as if that consoles are the be all and end all of gaming. These guys are shooting themselves in the foot. If I want to play with my mates how can I especially if they are a different rank? How can I do anything with the game apart from singleplayer? I can understand that making games for consoles are clightly easier but that is no reason to castrate your core market following. Last time I check COD rcoked the PC world and everyone loved them for it. Sure make the game avaible for consoles but dont say "BAHAHAHA F***K YOU" to the PC market. Unless I get this game free I'm likely not to bother buying it.

CoD2 is 3rd on the list.

David has seen in the past my passion and excitement about COD games as I have written in these things before. To me it seems like IW have "slept with the enemy" and by using a system called "IW.NET" (funny the whole battle.net is being recreated as we speak for SC2 ;)) it will make online playing almost extinct in the AUS\NZ and Asian market until they release servers based in Australia.

i'm dissapointed in IW. What is that old saying? If it aint broke don't fix? Console gamers might find it hard to understand why PC gamers are so furious about this and likewise PC gamers find it hard to understand why people play FPS on console. It's one of those age old fights which will never get a winner (just like PS3vs Xbox360)

A part of me deap down thinks that maybe IW are trying to see what the reaction would be? And why wouldn't they! I would have thought before doing any major change to a well oiled machine you would see what the flow on effect is. I'm hearing rumors that in the states some Best buy stores are having to cancel stocking the game because they have had too many preorders canceled and won't be able to move that game.

I wish that this was all some ploy on their behalf to get some "market research" or feedback on what would happen if they used this system for COD7. I just find it strange that first we got told about the great delay for the game, Then this? I also find it strange that a secret like this was kept so long and not leaked or information given about it.

I would like to finish on this note. I won't give IW a fuck you or a get fucked or any sort of comment like that. I think the general PC community will do a good enough job of that. I will end with this simple statement. I feel like me, PC gamer, have been pushed aside in the dash to make cash. I think that if you have a well oiled machine why change it? If it works and works well why would you make changes so massive why not talk to the fan base. Because at the end of the day if the fans don't like it, It won't move off the shelves of the store. I think this is a grave mistake and their profits will still be large! But when the question is asked about why PC sales are so low, they will know why

I guess that's Infinity Ward's way of saying that majority of their call of duty franchise sales is in the Console market.

Which also shows their true colours, as they leave their PC-based fans in the lurch.

So.. to be very honest here, I hope this backfires like a nailgun to the butt cheek.

No point shotting them in the butt cheek, if you do that they wont be able to sit down and recode the game the way it was meant to be. I think removing their legs from the knees down using a disk sander will be a much better punishment, because then they will be forced to sit down and recode it.

Seriously tho, who actually enjoy playing games like CoD4/MW type on a controller? I tried it, and it suck like hell. all I can think is that even if this does go ahead, they will never fill up the server they want to host. because ppl would rather play other games that actually easier to control with a controller. but hey.. I must admit this suck big time. personally I was actually looking forward to it. but now. I rather waste my money on FIFA 2010, and I'm a fan of PES series.

people buy PC games over console games for reasons like the having your own dedicated servers. Why on earth would they shut it down.

And with that thing how it says the alternative for servers will be, like playing only against players at a similair ranked level. what if people want to have clan wars? everyone will have to be at the top rank or something.

Im very dissapointed and most likely wont be buying this game, especially considering the modding side of things will be banned as i loved playing those cool sniper only, paintball, zombie and pro mod etc servers

just another pissed off comment i thought was necessary to make.

I wouldn't own my own PC (im 14) if there was no multiplayer side of things, once i finish singleplayer on a game, i get into multiplayer and usually never touch singleplayer again, i purchase games for multiplayer. I hope they can somehow make this work, otherwise alot of people will not buy this, and a waste of such a good game.

Playing with friends is one of the better things about multiplayer gaming. Hell even consoles think so by allowing you to invite your friends in to the game you are currently playing.

This reminds me of how Epic have turned around and treated their loyal PC customers who helped build them up to where they are.

I hope IW learn a hard lesson about supporting those who have supported you and helped you get to the top of your game.

But I can just seeing this back firing and the next releases of games in this series not being released on PC at all due to low sales.

Boycott the release and help crazy Russians reverse-engineer the game and put the proper multiplayer experience back in it.

This game has been surrounded by disappointment since it's release announcement. First the "dumbing down" of the Australian version, now this...

DLC is the new black(it seems they can get away with anything that use to be free content and im not talking about old expansion packs that actually included worthwhile things... bloody consoles) anyways FPS on PC > Console. Im not even a big fan of FPS but I can totally understand the disgust pc FPS fans are feeling.

even if they backflip, it would still leave a bitter taste in your mouth because they considered it. it reminds me how poorly the new iterations of fifa are handled on pc, even though the console version is tops!

Anyone who says we PC gamers should put up with this change obviously doesn't understand the standards we set companies in order for us to like their games. Fear 2 is a good example of a recent game without any dedicated servers; dead. I hear Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is heading that way, too.

Gamers from all platforms should stand united. This is, after all, a conglomerate of a company standing over us, telling us in a roundabout way what we should like or dislike in our games. They should not be lowering the standards of PC gaming to that of consoles, they should instead be raising the standards of console games to meet that of the PC gaming community.

I spam my mates with rage over games, at times. I keep asking myself, why the hell would they 'force' a feature upon us, why not just grant us two options, then LEARN from consumer response?? Ah, annoying. Companies always look in the wrong place when they're striving to make the next big change to gaming.

After no real response to this boycott from IW, I'm now sure that I'm cashing in my pre-orders (yes, plural) tomorrow, before it's too late. Could do with some cash to splash on a new GPU, anyways. :P

The sequel that was intended to redefine the genre as we know it has instead given us fans reason enough to redefine what we think of the company that made this insulting move. We expected more from you, IW.

COD 4 on Xbox was great for a long time, then they introduced that stupid fucking patch to find the best host for games.

Of course it was optimised for the americans with the rest of the world seemingly forgotten. This meant that you could have 8 Aussies all playing and killing in a lag free enviroment. Then someone would drop and an american would join, next round he would be host and the game would disband because the lag was so bad.

It was dead on the xbox for me and I bought the PC version.

Looks like its going to happen all over again. Yes Ill probably just pirate it or hire it from the video store.

IW HAS SPOKEN!

Copy\paste from bashnslash

Infinity Ward Responds To PC Fanboys' Dedicated Server Woes
Modern Warfare fansite bashandslash.com recently reported that Infinity Ward is removing dedicated server functionality from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With dedicated servers and the server browser that comes with them replaced with custom-built matchmaking, PC gamers will have an online experience functionally identical to console players. Among other things, this means that clans can't run their own servers with their own mods and rulesets for their own private (or public, if they feel like crushing some scrubs for giggles) use.

Predictably, nerds across world took to the Internet with a wailing and a gnashing of teeth that would make the Left 4 Dead community proud. An online petition to bring back dedicated servers at the time of this writing stands at 100,000+ signatures. However -- and this may shock some gamers with advanced persecution complexes -- this move was not made to tweak the noses of the PC community. Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella explain the decision as a conscious effort to improve their game for the vast majority of their players.

"We're just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners," says West. He points toward the mounting feedback IW has received from PC fans of Modern Warfare who couldn't find a decent server to play on between all of the cheaters, the insular communities, and huge skill level disparities that the original game's community fractured into. "We thought maybe it would be cool if the fans could play the game," he laughs.

IW says that gameplay concerns for the majority of MW2 players are the overriding reasons for the decision. Zampella downplays the obvious piracy prevention angle (IW has cited numbers of people online playing illegal copies of Modern Warfare up to 60 percent). "The Steam stuff helps with the piracy. I don't know that the matchmaking stuff does," he notes. West takes a shot at the motives behind some of the outrage, noting that there's money to made by selling dedicated servers and adspace on them: "It's a little dubious. Some of the people complaining are complaining with their pocketbook."

Again and again during our conversation, West and Zampella hammer the point that hardcore PC players lose very little to this change relative to the returns that casual to moderate fans will see. Clans can set up private matches to do their training or what have you; all they lose is the ability to customize the game on a deeper level with mods and such. Infinity Ward sees the addition of solid matchmaking and community support like IW-run tournaments to the PC as a huge win, and not something that could be done under the old system.

Why not have both? West does not want to include dedicated servers alongside the custom-built backend, stating that it would just "bifurcate the community."

Modern Warfare 2 For PC
On 10.20.09, In Video Games, By fourzerotwo
I recently broke news on a PC community member’s podcast that Modern Warfare 2 would be introducing a completely new backend infastructure called IWNET that would allow matchmaking for multiplayer games on PC. The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things, and sent shockwaves through the hardcore PC community, leading to many more questions than answers as to ‘HOW’ this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole.
Questions, assumptions, and speculation I intend to dispel.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever mad

I wasn't gonna buy it anyway - I thought COD4 was pretty boring (both SP and MP). Look at the positives: at least you wouldn't have to worry about using the terrible server browser that COD4 had.

Unfortunately, IW seem to be reacting to the market forces - PC does seem to be a shrinking market next to consoles, with piracy a major issue (at least according to a game developer friend of mine) with PC sales being only a fraction of consoles. That was for a primarily SP game though - online shooters require a unique licence key to play which should insulate the game from piracy (at least mostly).

It sucks and I hope no other devs follow their path, though.

Oct 21, 2009 10:27 PM
It's just a money grab.
Dedicated servers mean no more revenue for the developer. The community is able to keep the game alive as long as it likes.
If IW controls the servers and you don't buy the new maps as DLC you will probably get kicked every second map as you don't have it. When MW3 is due the MW2 servers will 'dry up'. You want to play? Keep paying.
Chook raffle server assignments is crap. Currently if you don't like the players, map or server you can bail and seek out your preference. Fixed.

Also, when BF1943 was released on the 360 there was no local servers (slight ommission from the sales spiel). Finding a playable game was nigh on impossible until complaints got some brought online.

PC Gaming: the shrinking market that grew 18% in 2008 and pulled in $12.7 Billion in games revenue. The overall market value for PC games and games hardware was USD 68 billion in 2008. This figure is expected to rise to USD 143 billion by 2013.

"In fact, surveys of US consumers show that about 60 per cent of all consumers over 18 play some kind of games and about 59 percent of them prefer PCs as their primary platform."

I agree IW have made possibly the biggest mistake in gaming history, after ET for the Atari. They decided to give their biggest potential market the finger by crippling a game that if it had followed in the footsteps of it's predecessors could have been a multi-million copy seller. Now the backlash from PC gamers means they may not even be able to get within ICBM range of the million mark, unless someone decides to fire an actual ICBM at IW in rage.

You'd have thought that IW would at least have given PC Gamers a choice whether they used the matchmaking service or just played on dedicated servers the way they did in the first MW. Then they wouldn't have pissed off hundreds of thousands of potential customers.
