Dune remake needs new director

Peter Berg departs the new version of Dune – so is Neil Marshall next in line to direct?

The planned big screen remake of Dune has hit a bit of a bump, with the news that director Peter Berg has left the project. Berg, responsible for the superb Friday Night Lights as well as the Will Smith hit Hancock, is currently attached to a big screen movie of the game Battleship, which is due for release in the summer of 2011. It's unclear whether Berg dropped out for scheduling reasons, or whether there were other problems.

So where does this leave Dune? The project is still very much going ahead, and there's a $175m budget attached to it too. However, finding someone to steer the ship isn't the easiest of jobs.

Over at Pajiba, the site has revealed - with the help of an inside source - that the search for a new director is centering in on Neill Bloomkamp and Neil Marshall. The former gave Sony a hit out of nowhere last summer with District 9, while the latter has The Descent under his belt.

Pajiba reports that Marshall is the reported frontrunner for the job, but there's some reticence on the part of Paramount to hand over the keys to the franchise to someone without a sizeable hit on his CV. As good as The Descent was, a money-making-machine it wasn't. Either he or Bloomkamp sounds like a good choice to us, mind.

The script for the project is in place, and reportedly has been since earlier this year. So it's down to Paramount now to find a director with a love for the source material, who can maximise the film's budget, and who wants to make the film. We'll keep you posted...

I really didn't like the original, they took way too much liberty with the story. Like seriously, weirding modules? And what was the point of Irulan in the movie? Plus some of the scenes were just corny and cringeworthy even for a movie of that vintage. It was always going to be a difficult story to translate to film but I really hope they do better the second time around.

I have a soft spot for Lynch's effort - even the weirding modules! But man, it has awesome production values. The sets and costumes are superb.

TV Miniseries = WIN.

David Lynch's attempt was ok, I loved it when I first watched it... But then I read the book and it lost appeal...

For it's time, I think Lynch did a great job. I guess it's hard to make a movie based on a popular book and keep it authentic as the Director wants to put his/her style into the movie.

Upon its release, director David Lynch distanced himself from the project, stating that pressure from both producers and financiers restrained his artistic control and denied him final cut.

I'm also interesting in seeing how Disney will go with the Tron sequel (nearly 30 years since the original)

Moar Dune = good. :)

I really liked both Lynch's take and the miniseries.

Will be interesting to see how this one goes.

It'll be interesting to see how it'll turn out. I don't mind the Dune universe, has an appeal to the masses.

I seriously doubt Bloomkamp will take the job though. After the bad taste he got from the wankers at Fox and Universal over the Halo debarcle, everyone thought he was crap... before he even got a proper chance at making a good film.

Look what happened when District 9 came out. Creativity and originality prevailed. Oops :/

I think he's quite happy to master his own work rather than taking up half-arsed jobs from other directors. Plus he's South African so that's already +1 from me :)

The TV miniseries was balls. The Lynch effort was reasonable.. if not true "Lynch" but then I guess with the budget/scale of the production it could never have been a Lynch film...
