Nvidia rebrands again

The Geforce 310 just a 210 with a funky 'new' name.

Nvidia continues its infamously successful "hey presto!" rebranding campaign detailing the oddly familiar Geforce 310 graphics card directly on its site.

Note to our readers: We are struggling not to make this an outright rant about naming schemes. Let's play along with the story and see how this turns out.

The Geforce 310 is a plain vanilla OEM graphics card for system builders who think their customers don't know any better, and let's face it, more often than not, that's true. The card is a carbon copy of its predecessor, the Geforce 210, a 589MHz core clock, 1402MHz shader clock and 500MHz memory clock graphics card with 512MB of DDR2 memory on a 64-bit wide bus. Same specs, same feature set, same everything.

These cards are one and the same. Period.

We dug deep to try and understand this, but otherwise came up with nothing. One could think it was spurred by the launch of Windows 7 and some sort of certification programme, but no. Geforce 210 was already Windows 7 certified, even though the spec sheet still reads "Vista-certified". You could say it was a matter of redesigning the card to bring down the bill of materials and improve margins, but heck no. No, wait, making it an OEM card saves Nvidia money on creating a new retail box for the card. Yes, that must be it.

We're beyond understanding the reasons, but consumers might be tricked into thinking that a Geforce G310 graphics card is the hottest thing in town, when what they actually get is Thanksgiving leftovers.

To wrap this up, here's a fun exercise, open two tabs on your browser and go to the G210 and G310 pages. Now flip tabs back and forward. It's like you haven't changed the page, except for a slightly blown-up picture of the otherwise identical card.

One thing can be said for the house of Nvidia, though - tradition is still what it used to be. You can now reliably cross out the first digit on the model number of every low-end through mainstream Nvidia graphics card when making your informed purchase decision.

We would, honestly, love to see something new coming out of Nvidia's shop. We really would, because the last thing the market needs is a lack of competition.

And AMD/ATI actually bothers to innovate and improve with the 58xx series. Much improved power at idle, better performance (even if it isn't mindblowingly improved, it is still improved), eyefinity... AMD/ATI rules the heap.

Is there anywhere that lists this and the previous renaming mumbo-jumbo?

Such as the 9800GT = the Geforce 1X0, or the 210 = 310, etc etc?

Nvidia often goes rebranding old products as new products. Nothing new there.

@Col. Sanders. I was merely having a dig at Nvidia. While it spins its marketting hype, rebadging old product with new labels, AMD/ATI actually releases (albeit with supply difficulties) new products.

But how many times could they possibly rename the same card? One could only think that would cost them money in paperwork, and employing someone to do a job they've already done?

Off to the ATi camp for me :)

Yeah, until Nvidia start doing some work and actually bring out new techonlogy, I'm just sticking with ATI.

If cars were marketed in this "new = older" way we would all be in horse and buggy. You gotta admire the shamelessness of it. Mind you, it keeps working because people keep supporting them.

Cars are remarketted this way.

Oh look! They tacked on a fancy wing and now it's the 2010 model!

I am really dissapointed with nVidia these days, its funny how brand image can deteriorate. 5 years ago i would never have thought i'd ever feel this way about their boards. I have owned way more nVidia cards than ati cards, but now i hope i will never need to buy another nVidia card.

At least with cars you actually get a new item. In this case, it's identical.

Really Devilsmurf? How often do you get some ACTUAL new technology in the car? You get a different sticker with the video card.

Nvidia have done a bunch of innovation in the past. I dont mind the name changes if it makes it easier to know where a product sits compared to their other products. It was the price rise with the gt250 that pissed me off. Like you were getting something better or newer that was worth more.

I think this is downright shameful and borders on deceptive trading if not completely crosses. I've never had a Dodgidia card and was considering a change, but never will these dodgy b@st@rds get my cash directly.

is the card cheaper than the 210? are they phasing out the 210 or keeping them around?

I remember when nvidia brought out the Geforce 4 MX which if i can recall were worse than geforce 3 Ti. they really do know how to dilute and confuse their customers making it like its new and better until you read closer into the specs.

You never did see this or at least notice this on the ATI side. one thing that always kept me away from ati was their updated drivers but they seem to be much better now. it all very cylindrical - Nvidia will crawl back with some awesome card and people will forget again.

Probably made a big booboo with their marketing strategy, and need to clarify it with a new name. That's a wild guess. Otherwise Im clueless, because these GT210's are pretty damn recent lol and they are already rebadging them

If Nvidia truly did not intend to mislead and trick customers, then they would have just called it the "210 OEM".

Would this sort of thing fall under Obtaining Financial Benefit by deception? Are they charging more for these cards?
