The return of RoboCop is another victim of the MGM troubles. Plus there’s the small matter of it going 3D, too...
It's not the biggest shock in the world, given the well-reported perilous financial state of MGM, but Moviehole recently reported that the planned remake/reimagining/reboot of RoboCop is being caught up a little in the crossfire too.
The new RoboCop film was supposed to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, but the site reports that there's been some disagreement between him and the studio, which accounts for some of the delay. MGM is apparently keen to make the film in 3D, something that Aronofksy isn't inclined to do. It's difficult to see just how that's going to be resolved: MGM would clearly be looking for a blockbuster movie, and we remain unsure that Aronofsky will be the fit for what it's looking to do.
We might be going out on a limb here, but we'd be genuinely surprised if, when the planned RoboCop film happens, Aronofsky is behind the camera. You watch. MGM will want Zac Efron in the title role next.
All this, of course, is moot in the current climate, as even if everyone was happy and smiling and in broad agreement, MGM couldn't greenlight the movie if it wanted to. And that leaves RoboCop firmly in limbo for the time being, with no sign of a green light under the ownership issues of the studio are resolved.
