Dell packs a gaming notebook into a netbook

Alienware M11x plays genie in a bottle.

Dell has launched a rather odd but quite impressive gaming laptop packed into a form generally associated with a netbook.

Coming under the Alienware brand, the M11x was showcased at CES, but is now available to the roving masses. It packs in an Intel ultra low voltage Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor running at 1.3GHz, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory at 1066MHz, a Geforce GT 335M graphics card with 1GB of dedicated GDDR3 memory and your choice of a 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive or a 256GB SSD.

As you might expect, the M11x runs 64-bit Window 7 Ultimate edition and packs in all the usual connectivity options in including 802.11n WiFi, HDMI, three USB ports, card reader and firewire as well as Displayport and an optional 3G modem available. All of this is stuffed into a chassis with an 11-inch screen and weighing in at around two kilograms.

Dell reckons that its 'mini beast' clocks up a respectable 3DMark 06 score of 6,100, although how it would fare under the much more current 3DMark Vantage will have to remain to be seen once we get one into our lab. It also boasts eight and half hours of battery life, but we only imagine that's not going to be the case when you're taking down Onyxia or headshotting noobs.

Reminiscent of Robin Williams' character of the genie in Disney's Aladdin who decries the plight of the genie by saying, "PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWERS! ... Itty-bitty living space," we're not quite sure who the M11x is trying to appeal to as the concept of playing some of the latest high-def games on such a small screen can't be all that attractive.

With the price tag starting at £749, whether or not the M11x will be a success remains to be seen, but regardless it's certainly an impressive feat of engineering.

I'd love a more powerful netbook. It's all well and good having a 17" gaming laptop, until the battery runs out and you have to pack it up and go back home. My only gripe is the processor - 1.3ghz? Tht's slower than my Asus 1000HE, and wouldn't run anything at all.

Ugh gaming notebooks, so hard to find a semi decent one...

especially when nvidia just keeps re branding its same G92 mobile cores.

Mademan - is your netbook a dual-core Core2 or an Atom? Think about it...

As for the market: notebooks are more and more common at LANs, as the games people actually want to play together play quite acceptably on their portable machines. (DotA anybody?). Also, would be great to have a single machine that's good for uni and for LANs.

Not sure about the price, but apart from that I'd certainly consider it, especially since it's no big deal to have it attached to a bigger screen most of the time.

Honestly, I'd prefer a 14 or 15" screen for gaming. Looking at a small squinty 11 or 10" screen for gaming isn't going to work for me.

guys its a netbook not a notebook hence 1.3ghz and 10 inch screen, i cant beleive it took this long for a small game rig to come out.
im writing this on my dell mini 9 and wish i had the grunt of one of these.
10 inch screen wouldnt need much grunt cos of the small res.

@Mademan - as thesorehead has pointed out, your 1000HE is an Atom. This is a Core 2 Duo, albeit a ULV one. It'd be approximately 2-5x faster than the Atom in a 1000HE, depending on the task.

I'm impressed they can boast an 8hr battery life, the Geforce GT 335M must have an amazingly good idle/2D mode power consumption.

@tantryl, I believe the 8 hours is when you're using the integrated GPU. It's rated at 2 or so hours with the dedicated GPU, which is still quite impressive considering.

I just checked, and they're charging Australians a fortune for one.

@Cyber - Well, the Aussie pricing essentially makes it pointless. Even if you get it sent over you've got to deal with warranty issues and import taxes and the fees of someone sending it over.

2hrs with the model with dedicated graphics? Suddenly I'm not interested, even ignoring the AUD pricing.

Well, you can't expect miracles. I can't think of any mobile laptops that do any better than 2 hours with a dedicated GPU.

I also noticed that the Australian one was more expensive because it comes with better specs, whilst the US version is a cut down version which you can 'customise'. So it's about $1200AUD vs $1600AUD IIRC.

Would I buy one? Can't say I would. It's too heavy and bulky for a netbook, and it really a notebook in terms of price.
