Confirmed: Neil Gaiman to write Doctor Who episode

Neil Gaiman signs up for Doctor Who series 6, he confirms.

Every now and then, you get one of those stories where the planets appear to have formed into some kind of perfect alignment. In this case, it's with regards the long-rumoured marriage of one of our favourite writers - Mr Neil Gaiman - to one of our favourite shows - Doctor Who. Rumours linking Gaiman with writing an episode of Doctor Who are nothing fresh, of course, but there's never been firm confirmation of that.

Furthermore, when the writers' list for Steven Moffat's maiden season of Doctor Who under his watch came out, Gaiman was nowhere to be seen. Could this one be staying a rumour forever, we wondered?

No, is the answer. For at the SFX Weekender this weekend past, Gaiman sent a special message which revealed that he's penned an episode for the sixth series of the revived Who. Here's what he had to say:

"As anyone who's read my blog knows, I'm a big fan of a certain long-running British SF TV series. One that started watching - from behind the sofa - when I was three. And while I know it's cruel to make you wait for things, in about 14 months from now, which is to say, NOT in the upcoming season but early in the one after that, it's quite possible that I might have written an episode. And if I had, it would originally have been called ‘The House of Nothing'. But it definitely isn't called that any more.

Countdown. You've got about 14 months."

You can read the full story at SFX here.

We are happy.

Series 6, that's a good year away for sure. They're making a fair few assumptions that people will still watch doctor who after David Tennant left. I mean, the show will go on, but it could be another Sylvester McCoy thanks to the new cast/crew/doctor and direction they're taking.

Could be awesome.

Apparently Stephen Fry's still eager to pen an episode too. He had one written for an earlier season, but things fell through. Hopefully it gets a second shot!

You've never heard of Gaiman, studor? Wrote the groundbreaking Sandman comics, author of American Gods, Coraline, and Neverwhere? Currently engaged to the awesomely hot and talented Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls?

Sheesh...

Don't forget "Stardust", which was made into one of my fave films of '07.

Did anyone else think "who is this person and why have they been hiding under a rock for god knows how long?"? :)
