Watchmen 2 news round-up

Could we be seeing Watchmen spin-offs and another movie?

The Internet, you may have noticed, appears to have become awash with word of Watchmen 2 over the past few days, courtesy primarily of a post from Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool. Johnston has uncovered plans to develop a sequel project to the Watchmen comic book, which is the best-selling DC publication ever.

The idea, reports the site, of a Watchmen 2 had been held off by previous DC head honcho Paul Levitz, who believed it would be against the wishes of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. But Levitz is no longer in that role, and thus the belief is that Dan DiDio, senior vice-president/executive editor at DC, is now investigating the idea of Watchmen spin-offs, with a prequel mini-series in the offing.

Contractually, it seems that Gibbons and Moore have to be offered the project first, but if they turn it down, it can still go ahead. Soundings, Johnston reports, have been taken from those who may be interested in taking on the challenge.

The full story, which goes into some detail, can be found here, and right now, the world seems to be awaiting some kind of formal response from all concerned.

One offshoot of the story, though, is that some speculated another movie may then be in the offing. That, however, won't be happening. Over at Deadline Hollywood, Nikki Finke quotes an insider as saying "There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot."

The ultimately disappointing grosses from the Watchmen movie, considering how much it cost to make, outright killed any chance of that happening. And that's before the legal spat between Fox and Warner Bros, which, no doubt, covers potential sequels, is taken into account.

We await further developments with trepidation. And kudos, of course, to Bleeding Cool for breaking the story.

My late wife and I went to the movies to see this load of crap, and all I can say is god save us form any more of it.

And don't get me started on that big blue bastard and the crap that spewed forth from him during the whole film.

I hear Alan Moore *loves* the idea of sequels and spin-off! /end sarcasm

Given his loathing of the first film project, I'd be amazed if he didn't end up murdering an exec or two with nothing but his beard.

@bowiee: What?! It was an outstanding adaptation of the comic! Actually, there's a question: did you know the original comic at all? Do you like superhero stuff?

@hector: He could kill them with it, and then hide the bodies IN IT!

Bwaaa ha ha ha! He COULD too!

@bowiee: And if you *do* like superhero stuff, did you realise it was going to be the antithesis of superhero stuff?

I had never read or even heard of the Watchmen comic. Loved the movie, and waited for the directors cut to be released on BD before buying it.

If there is a sequel, can't wait!

Off topic: For those that have seen the BD Directors cut, did they make Dr Manhatten's schlong smaller?

i loved the film (especially the ultimate cut which still hasn't been released in australia yet) and the comic but i can't see a spinoff or sequel ending well, but i'd love to be proven wrong.

Nope don't know the original comic, went into the movie with an open mind, came out lobotomised :(

I do like super hero stuff and good stories,I loved batman, xmen, fantastic four, ect. Unfortunately this movie lacked a good story, good script, and took it's self way to seriously and just got bogged down in it's own crapulence !

And if I have to hear that blue bastard waffle on one more time with his supposed in depth view of the world, the human condition, bla, bla, bla, Then someone is going to be harmed. ;)

Argh.

Brain hurt.

Someone not able to see point of Watchmen.

Argh.

I mean even though the movie fudged the emotional core of the characters and sort of eluded the point the comic was making about the idea of supers... it still had the base concept in there, if a bit harder to see if you hadn't already read the comments.

Sequel to Watchmen? Hah. Snyder won't have any part of it, 'cause he has a soul and has shown he not just gives a shit about the original material but actually tends to honour it. Moore will probably pen a script though, that crazy bearded bastard. He loves movie adaptions.

Seems like it'll be Spider-man 3, but without the exceptional director and actors (ie shit without even the style and substance of talented movie makes).

I thought watchmen was a great movie, so I'm not sure why bowiee is so negative.
It had a great script and an even better cast, so bowiee, even if you do have an opinion, why not just keep it to yourself since your a minority!

Yeah! And what about those black people, huh?! They should just shut up too! Damned minorities, coming in here and expressing opinions all over the place!

@iruss71, Pardon me all to hell for having an opinion opposed to other points of view here.

And according to you only the majority can express their point of view. So this is you first time visiting our planet ? Welcome ! But be warned not everyone will share your point of view, and (shock horror), may even have the audacity to express their own point of view. :)

Jonsey301, i think you'll find it is, unless there is 3 versions of the film.

There is three versions. The one shown in theater, the directors cut (30 mins longer) and the ultimate cut (inculdes Tales of the Black Freighter as it was in the comic so its another 30mins longer)

Although I agree with iruss71 that Watchmen was a great movie, bowiee still has a right to be negative about Watchmen, even when it hurts to see people not understanding how great a movie it was.

Bwahahaha...great comment hectorbustnuts. Summed it up perfectly in sarcasm. Minority's should be allowed to speak up, even if their opinions suck and frustrate me.

Would love to see Spin offs of Watchmen. As long as it has the same level of awesomeness as the first and has a brilliant sound track like the first.

Funny thing is I never said anything to any one here who liked the movie.

But you and iruss71 seem to think it's ok to comment on my opinion that I thought it was crap, instead of just accepting that not everyone will like the things you like.

I have already explained why I did not like it, but that is not good enough for you and iruss71, you still act like it is a personal affront to you both.

Apparently my opinions "suck and frustrate you." And it "hurts to see people not understanding how great a movie it was."

IMHO your comments are just plain condescending, and as critical of my opinion as iruss71's was.

Many here liked the movie, I did not. Get over it.
