Neil Marshall's new film full of Romans and Awesome

Video: Centurion suddenly Atomic's most looked forward to film of the year!

Why weren't we told?

Neil Marshall, he of the super-cool werewolf film Dog Soldiers, has a new film coming that looks set to bring the same gritty drama and bloody action to the swords and sandals epic that he did to the horror film. And what a cast! The Wire's Dom West, 300 and Inglourious Basterds' Michael Fassbender, Mickey from Doctor Who, and Olga Kurylenko (the last Bond girl) as a blood-thirsty Pict.

Actually... a really sexy, bloodthirsty Pict. Anyway, we're sold already - just watch the trailer and you will be too:

So far the film only has a UK and Finland release date, but we'll gladly sacrifice something to the Roman Gods to get this in a cinema out here.

Mmmmm...could be good. Looks almost like Brian Wood's "Northlanders" comic series brought to life.

I fear Neil Marshall's going to have to work to win me back after "Doomsday", though.

Is this the next genre to be done to death, though? With "Robin Hood" coming and "Spartacus" on the small-screen, I just wonder.

I hear Spartacus is pretty crappy, though.

As to being done to death... hardly. The sand and sandals epic (or, snow and... snomething else) used to be the only epic genre at the cinema! Everyone thought Gladiator would see the period epic go crazy, but it never really happened then, and I can't see it happening now.

Spartacus is pritty decent, if you are fine with lots of sex and gore

Yeah, I suppose. I think the period's kind of slid more into mainstream since Gladiator, though...with 300, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven and the Rome TV series springing to mind. (Either that or I've been watching way too many repeats of Time Team).

I've yet to watch "Spartacus"...the very mixed reviews aren't really selling it to me.

Man, give me Rome any day...

Also, you do realise that those films you've listed happen over a ten year period - that's hardly a flood!

I realised that as I hit post, actually. :/

I must be having way too much fun, 'cause that decade FLEW by.

Gah! And I hit post too early!

Robin Hood, Spartacus (TV), Centurion, Clash of the Titans *shudders* and Prince of Persia *shudders again* are all landing this year alone.

I'd still say it's certainly a growing genre again.

I bet you could find years in the golden age of hollywood where that would be considered a slow year :)

Interestingly, though, I really don't see Titans or Prince of Persia as part of that historical epic thing - they're cashing in on nostalgia and a gaming license. Hood and Centurian seem more honest epics, and at least are either telling established filmic tales or going after something a bit more new.

Yeah, I get exactly what you're saying. We'll see how they pan out. "Centurion" certainly seems like one to keep one's eyes on at any rate.

This does look pretty awesome. Turn your brain off, escapist, awesome - the best kind.

Anyone who likes the look of this, should do themselves a favour, go to the library and get one of Simon Scarrow's "Eagle" novels. I've read a whole pile of Roman historical fiction, and in my opinion Simon Scarrow's are definitely the best.

I tried Scarrow, but it really didn't work for me - still can't go past Bernard Cornwall of the best writer of that kind of stuff, IMHO.

meh, whatever. It doesn't look too bad - the General bears more than a close similarity to Maximus though.

You could put anyone in segmentata and that helm and it would be hard NOT to look like Maximus :)
