NVIDIA comment on GPU renaming issue

NVIDIA pass the blame to OEMs.

NVIDIA have recently been in talks with journalists at bit-tech.net, and have explained their notorious 'rebranding' of GPUs by pinning it on OEM partners.

When questioned at a press event, NVIDIA spokesmen claimed that "it only rebranded its products at the request of large PC OEMs".

Richard Swinburne, author of the article, muses that "[Dell and HP] often require new products because they need to have something new to sell to customers, whileNvidia [sic] needs to appear to be competitive with ATI".

However, in complete opposition to this OEM-motivated explanation is what we saw last year; when board partners refused yet another name change.

Whatever the reasons behind the renaming scheme, it seems that its only effect is to create confusion in the consumer market - though NVIDIA argues "we won't ever see a rebranded product available at our favourite retailers".

Yeah, right.

"Board partners" and "Dell and HP" are fairly different animals though. I could see Dell and HP not wanting to be seen to be selling outdated tech. So their point could be fairly made about OEM pressure (but not from the likes of ASUS, giabyte etc.)

That said though I can't see Dell or HP caring too much about a segment they are likey to do stuff all business in. I'd be more inclined to point the finger at Nvidia.

Yeah I'm with you fliptopia. The finger should be pointed at nvidia. this isn't new and as far as I'm concerned my respect for nvidia is quite low.

their hardware quality isnt what it used to be (one just has to look at the problematic 8M series on the laptops) and as far as I'm concerned my next card will be from ATI if I can help it.

Yet when ATI release a new card name, there is actually something different with the tech, and the code.

yeh, I agree, SceptreCore, nVidia's renaming of products just to appear to be keeping up with ATI/AMD is dishonest, and confusing....and they don't mind charging a premium for the con
probably why my last 3 or 4 graphics cards have been ATI - I've had a lot of nVidia cards in the past, but that hasn't been for 3 years, or so.
the value/performance seems to lay in the red camp at the moment.
I wish that they'd pull their shonky fingers out, and give the marketplace some real competition at a fair price - then we may see lower prices.

Let's just hope that Fermi can knock the socks of ATI for performance and price, however unlikely (for the price). Then nVidia will be completely on my good side again. Right now they hover about halfway. The 3D setup at the Power to the PC Tour Brisbane reminded my why I still like some parts of nVidia.

Surely this is deceptive trading.
