Valve tease Mac users with Steam; possible Portal 2 rumour surfaces

Essential Linkage: Valve stir up their usual storm of curiosity and intrigue!

Valve, being the ever-amusing and skilled developer of such games as Half life 2, Left 4 dead and Portal, have kept their online gaming service Steam PC-only since its introduction in 2004 - but is that now changing?

We certainly think so; they've released six images to six different websites across the interweb, each hinting at Apple's Mac platform getting their own version of Steam (and possibly even Mac compatible Source games!).

Each picture is styled in the Mac style, and each is an amusing play on Apple's ads over the years - so jump into our convenient gallery of pics to see them in all their awesomeneity.

Not content with teasing Mac users, Valve have also released a patch for the original Portal game that adds in a total of 26 radios throughout the game - each that play a series of Morse code beeps when carried to specific areas.

Arstechnica describe them in more detail, and the Steam forums have collected the hints into a gigantic list, but perhaps most disturbing of all is the sound that the radios make when thrown into a force field (make sure you don't have your audio blaring).

Whether or not this is an actual confirmation for either Steam on Mac or Portal 2 is of course unconfirmed; but Valve wouldn't go to this amount of trouble for no reason.

I'm excited that Valve have gone to all this trouble, I just hope whatever is released lives up to the hype.

I'm personally hoping for Orange Box 2.

I just had a look at the pics, and I think there's definitely something in the works! Though, apart from valve porting their source games to Mac, how many Mac games would they have? Will this transform Mac gaming? Or will it just be Valve and Popcap?

Love the I'm a PC ad.

Seriously though of the two, why not the Engineers sentry gun. I don't see the portal sentry upgradeable with missiles. You have to get a completely different sentry gun for that.

Yes, I too am skeptical about how steam games will go on a mac. Excellent idea, but will other publishers follow? Maybe EA will get back on the bandwagon, but given how bad PC gaming is dying, will it work? And would Apple really allow someone else's app store into their kingdom?

That said, Portal news. Omg.

Fredz, that's why given the choice of the pc like Engineer sentry and the Mac like portal sentry... you have to go the PC.

Sure it can be overcome by a radio and some wires applied to it. But a portal sentry can too; just fired at high speed from the end of the portal device.
