Windows 7 SP1 will be brought forward

So much for Windows 7 not needing a service pack for a year or so...

The rumour mill claims that Microsoft has abandoned its plans to wait nearly two years after Windows 7's launch to issue the first service pack for its latest operating system.

TechARP.com, a Malaysian website that somehow has managed to guess service pack schedules for both Windows XP and Vista, said the Vole has changed its mind.

Originally Microsoft wanted a 22-month development schedule for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). But the company has since changed its mind, reportedly to address an unknown number of "serious" performance bugs.

Now it seems that SP1 will come out in the fourth quarter of this year, which is apparently the earliest the Vole can manage it.

If it follows this timetable then it will fit with the same program that Microsoft used in the past for Windows XP and Windows Vista. It issued Windows XP SP1 10 months after the initial release in October 2001, and delivered Windows Vista SP1 about a year after its January 2007 retail launch.

But the Vole likely isn't happy that word is out that it is planning to release Windows 7 SP1 late this year. Although Microsoft has claimed that Windows 7 is selling well, businesses and home users might decide to hold off buying it now and wait until after SP1 is released.

windows 7 SP1, the first service pack to forcefully include that "dial home to authenticate" and "always online to MS servers" rubbish in the KB971033 patch.

can we gather that this whole "article" is based on one website in malaysia having a guess at a release date?

Do we know that Count? I mean, they didn't even install that patch in Windows Update unless you specifically told it to. Heck, it wasn't even ticked by default!

God enough with this "Vole" crap, it angers me every time I see it.

Cyberglitch: There has been numerous reports (and my own personal experience) that the patch autodownloads with windows update's scheduled update task and will install without user consent.

Microsoft always puts patches like this into their service packs, whether they're optional or not. Was the same with Vista, XP, 2000, anything on their "important" list, whether optional or not, was installed with each subsequent service pack.

Hmm. I suspect that they won't put it in, purely because it'll piss people off. Otherwise they would have pushed the patch in the first place. I doubt they want people avoiding SP1 because of it.

Ok maybe I missed something but why does Microsoft = "Vole"? Is this an Atomic "in" joke?

studor, it's a stupid inquirer thing. It's typical of poor english tabloid journalism. They use emotive terms becasue they believe that they are showing they are siding with their reader base or some crap.

The vole is an animal that never stops consuming, it pretty much does nothing but eat. That seems to be the concensus as I have read it...

i'm sure even if the 1033 "fix" is in the SP, there will be "studious folk" that will remove it, and release it in certain online sharing places.

I wish we wouldn't syndicate Inquirer rubbish.

We should syndicate Slashdot articles.

Well I for one have been holding out on getting Win7 until the first service pack was released and embedded on subsequent retail disks. I did this for Vista, XP and so forth. Smart if you ask me.

Windows 7 is more like Vista SP3. So now it should be called Vista SP3 SP1
