Pretty damn good kitlog :) Might I suggest an i3 430 using integrated graphics for the HTPC tho? A lower powered PSU like the Earthwatts 380 would also be more efficient than the HX-520 at low power levels.

Aaand (now I'm worried about appearing as a smartass), the Dell 3008 WFP has epic input lag (46ms avg), the 2560x1440 27" Dell U2711 might be a better choice for a discerning (and loaded) gamer?

Awesome.

One suggestion though. It would be super cool to be able to turn the cursor into a magnifying glass, so you could skim over text without having to zoom.

I think the kitlog should have a part for notebooks, just a single page, so you know the best in each class for portable computing, Might not be very Atomic, but with laptops like Asus G73JH and the Alienware M17x things in the notebook area are beginning to heat up.

Heat up is the right word...all that power in such a small space! lol :P

There's an error in the Home Server build.

It suggests you can use the optical drive as a drink holder, but as it is a slot load, rather than tray load, you can't use it as a drinks holder.

Just thought i should let you know.

Cheers!

Looks ok. I see you have given up on the Aywun coolers now. The only thing I'd question is recommending an IPS screen. They can look awesome but without colour managed software they can have big overblown and hard to look at colours.

philo-sofa, I did consider a lower-powered chip for that build, though in previous issues people seemed to really like a high-powered HTPC that they can leave to encode video. A Quadcore is so much better for it than the dualcore. Plus I really think the graphics card gives more flexibility, especially when hooking it up to a wide range of HDTVs. Interesting point on the screen (and fliptopia too), I'll look into screens closer for next time.

asdfghjkl (fun name to type!), there has to be a limit on builds somewhere! If you take just the components from some of these builds, minus all the peripherals such as screens and speakers, then you'll be closer to that amount.

antifunker, that's a limitation of the hosting service we use. It might be added in the future, but we don't have control over it.

Tazor, indeed it's not very Atomic, and it's also not what Kitlog is about (building, not buying pre-assembled). However, if you check out our sister title PC Authority you'll find pretty much exactly what you're after (though the printed magazine is *much* easier to read, imo):

Caelum, treat it as a small dish. Pour the drink in there, voila, it's holding it! No? Ah well, I tried :P

fliptopia, yeah, the Aywuns were great little 'sinks, but they were way too hard for people to actually buy. Nice point on the IPS screens, might go for a Twisted Nematic one instead.

WTF? I'm calling this entire KitLog series a lesson in paid-for advertising!! Search for Nvidia in any Kitlog to date and the best you will find is a GT240 Referenced in the "Ultra Budget" pc in Kitlog2. What a load of BS! Are you seriously telling me that you would ALWAYS pick ATI cards over Nvidia? and Is this despite the fact that two GTX cards in SLI will Sh!t all over an ATI setup?

I pay to read atomic magazine, but I'm not going to bother wasting my time reading your kitlog if you cant at least show some un-biased assessment of the hardware. Pull your finger out Atomic! You should be ashamed of yourselves!

They choose the best solution at the time of writing, Geoxx. Don't take it personally.

Geoxx, I can honestly say, in answer to your question - yes. My last two PC builds at home have had ATI cards.

In short, we're not ashamed, we're not paid for that opinion, and you can kindly bugger off ;)

I've owned multiple systems and upgraded each of them personally enough times to have intimate knowledge of both ati and nvidia. My experience says that depending on the latest cards available at any given moment both nvidia and ati will have a variety of options available. Statistically alone this means the kitlog should have at least one nvidia in each edition. hawkeye can bugger himself, my opinion was that a one sided story the kitlog should Not be. To say ati is better is to be ignorant. And similarly for nvidia. And cyberglytch is incorrect to say they chose the best when even atomic magazine disagrees with the basic ultimate pc hardware. This kitlog is a joke if not biased.

Geo, you're always entitled to an opinion, and I'll be as polite as possible about it.

But so much as hint that we practice any kind of cash for commentary... well, I don't know a single journo who wouldn't find that the deepest insult.

But you seem to be taking this very personally...

Geoxx you do realize that when this issue of kitlog was written NVIDIA were making GPU’s that doubled as hotplate’s. I guess you can think it is a bias review but I think a card that ran as hot as NVIDIA’s did at release was a bad piece of hardware and should be reviewed as such

Im sorry i may have taken things personally, but i was very dissapointed to say the least. I've seen atomic rip entire articles of the web without so much as a decent reference to the original authors and will qoute you the references if anyone wants to cry about it. That aside there are many good reads and I buy the mag simply to get the info I want without having to search too hard.

On to this kitlog tho

Even going back to march 2010 I can still find kit from other manufacturers that are just as worthy of inclusion. So I'm happy to retract all previous statements and replace them all with this one.

Fact: only one nvidia card has ever been included in the kitlog
You let readers think what they may...

Geoxx, I'd love you to quote the references you're talking about.
