Bad Company 2 sells a motza

Despite issues, EA and DICE's latest Battlefield epic blows away the competition.

As we reported earlier in the week, Bad Company 2 has some issues. But that's not stopped it busting out a huge sales figure at launch.

The latest Battlefield game is set to top the sales charts for this month, based on internal EA sales data. The game's pushed over 2.3 million units worldwide.

"We are so thrilled with the success of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sales and fan response. In the first 48 hours we had such a tremendous rush to multiplayer gameplay that our servers experienced overwhelming demand. This is a testament to the massive response players have had worldwide for the extraordinary action experienced in the Battlefield sandbox," says Karl Magnus Troedsson, Executive Producer, Battlefield Franchise.

That's some neat spin right there: server failure as 'good thing'. The press release also goes on to mention the overwhelmingly positive reviews the game's seen, which we commented in our earlier article.

That said, EA is making headway on dealing with the game's various server and browser-based issues. Those who followed the impressive thread of commentary from earlier in the week will no doubt be thrilled to know (okay, maybe not as thrilled as us) that recent updates seem to have fixed things for us at least. As of this morning, we have zero issues logging into a game.

And it would be interesting to see how many of those units where console and PC.

Yes EA, would be nice to see some proper stats on sales figures, as 'chapps' mentioned above.
I'm thinking on getting this for PC. I suck at FPS on consoles.

Its equal share apparantly.

They stated somewhere that there were as many people playing on PC as there were on 360 or ps3.

If mw2 sold $550 million gross in a week, bc2 won't compete at 2.3 million units in 1 month cross platform..

Wouldn't that be like, maybe 850K~ maybe being the first week, making $650~ per unit? Heck 2.3m in 1 week, at 550 gross profit is ~240 a unit.

Since they don't want to tell us the pc/console ratio, It really leaves us in the dark. I know a lot of people canceled pc orders and went console, and later on picked up pc versions.

Yeah it's a fair bit less than MW2 by the look of it. 2.3m units @ maybe 60 a pop is around about $140m (US), although bear in mind that can only be for 2 weeks or less (given the release date).

Not up to MW2's standards for sales, but pretty impressive nonetheless.

I really wonder if the figures would be reversed if BC2 came out first..?

I seriously doubt it. Remember, in our Hot 100 poll, Modern Warfare topped out as the best action game of all time. Bad Company didn't even make the cut.

How did Battlefield 2 far in that poll?

That's supposed to be "fair".

^^ afaik it should be 'fare' - English is a weird language sometimes. I'm with you if you feel BF2 is a better action game tho, but I guess it's a mixture of personal preference and what was released most recently...

From memory, about just as well.

Or are the sales perhaps boosted by those who felt a little underwhelmed by the MW2 multiplayer experience, and went looking for something else?

I don't know what they have done to the servers recently, but lately, quite a few of my friends and I have been having really disgusting lag as well as the occasional dump out to the dashboard.

Personally I really think EA screwed up their server sizing for this. I mean kudos for actually having dedicated servers but it just seems screwed since they did their last update about 4-5 days ago.

Which is odd, because since then I can see more servers than ever, and am having zero issues :)

I haven't had the issues that have plagued other people but I know some that have had crash to desktop and similar. The server browser isn't great but it works well enough if you have a server name to search for. Plus I'd bet some of the issues are graphics cards overheating and crashing the GPU driver.

As for the sales thing, Bad Company 2 will never get close in dollar terms. MW2 was selling for a $10 premium across all systems with no major discounting that I heard of. And the $550mil (or whatever it was) included the $150 USD "prestige edition" of the game.

Meanwhile you can buy a "squad copy" of B:BC2 (4 games) for $150 USD from Steam. So I wouldn't expect to have the dollar figure released. Hopefully the 2.3 units sold so far encourage more work on patching and extra content.

Btw nice google ads :) quote "Bad Company 2 Hacks - Aimbot, ESP, Wallhacks +More! Starting at $5/week and $15/Month"
