AMD and Intel price details are leaked

Why wait for the press release?

AMD and Intel are both fuming after pricing information on their latest chips has been printed by the Far Eastern trade press.

Although it is not as if the chips have been handed to hacks in brown paper envelopes. The chips were seen on sale from e-retailers.

The prices leaked include AMD's forthcoming six-core challengers dubbed Phenom II X6 and Intel's Gulftown six-core Core i7-980X.

It looks like three Phenom II X6 processors will become available in the second quarter of 2010. These will be the 2.6GHz 1035T, the 2.8GHz 1055T, and the 3GHz 1075T. Pricing for the 1055T is about $US199, while a previously unannounced 3.2GHz 1090T Black Edition will cost $US295. Another six-core AMD processor, the 1095T, will become available in 4Q 2010.

Meanwhile Intel will release a dual-core Core i5-680, which, at $US284, will cost nearly as much as a six-core AMD chip. Intel also will release a quad-core Core i7-870, which is a lower-voltage CPU at 82 Watts TDP priced at $US560.

Intel also plans to release unlocked CPUs for the enthusiast crowd. Each of new unlocked processors will be marked with the K suffix on its model name.

Intel's gear is difficult to unlock and overclock, although users have still been able to modify the front side bus speed.

The Core i7-875K will be unlocked, although it's not clear if Intel plans to release more of these chips.

Wow two more cores at a time when most people are flat our making use of 4 cores.

I want more clock speed baby ! Where is my 5GHz chip ?

This is true, only 3D rendering applications would be able to use that many cores, having been designed to function on servers. Anything else would be redundant.

guess its time to learn how to multi task 3 first person shooters via brainwaves to use these new 6 core beasts. Or hit the game industries to make a better AI that does not cheat to have a competitive advantage.

More cores is the obvious way to go. There's only so much clock speed you can run CPUs at before they're unstable. You also have to factor in heat and power requirements.

Modern operating systems do a good job assigning applications to different cores when required. If you need the CPU faster, then overclock it yourself. :)

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if down the track 32nm parts will be closing in on 4GHz stock. They're quite awesome.

That's right cyb3r, the 32nm chips use less power so produce less heat, so why not up the clock speed ? I demand more speed ! ;)

If they have room for 6 cores, could they have a 2 core of around the same size with 100Mb on more of cache??

More cache = slower cache...

Also yes by reducing the tpd of the chips you would think they could bring out some beefy dual cores that break the 4ghz barrier easily...
