Why wait for the press release?
AMD and Intel are both fuming after pricing information on their latest chips has been printed by the Far Eastern trade press.
Although it is not as if the chips have been handed to hacks in brown paper envelopes. The chips were seen on sale from e-retailers.
The prices leaked include AMD's forthcoming six-core challengers dubbed Phenom II X6 and Intel's Gulftown six-core Core i7-980X.
It looks like three Phenom II X6 processors will become available in the second quarter of 2010. These will be the 2.6GHz 1035T, the 2.8GHz 1055T, and the 3GHz 1075T. Pricing for the 1055T is about $US199, while a previously unannounced 3.2GHz 1090T Black Edition will cost $US295. Another six-core AMD processor, the 1095T, will become available in 4Q 2010.
Meanwhile Intel will release a dual-core Core i5-680, which, at $US284, will cost nearly as much as a six-core AMD chip. Intel also will release a quad-core Core i7-870, which is a lower-voltage CPU at 82 Watts TDP priced at $US560.
Intel also plans to release unlocked CPUs for the enthusiast crowd. Each of new unlocked processors will be marked with the K suffix on its model name.
Intel's gear is difficult to unlock and overclock, although users have still been able to modify the front side bus speed.
The Core i7-875K will be unlocked, although it's not clear if Intel plans to release more of these chips.
