LG gets all tingly over 3D TVs

Looks for the Avatar effect...

LG Electronics has become the latest company to show its hand in 3D TVs, competing against its rivals Sony, Panasonic and Samsung.

According to reports, the company said it has ambitious plans to sell one million 3D television sets this year and hopes to take a quarter of the emerging 3D TV market.

It unveiled 47-inch and 55-inch 3D TVs that are back-lit by LEDs and are reported to be hitting shelves in late April. Each TV will also carry two pairs of special glasses needed to see the 3D picture.

LG has only around a 10 per cent share in the LCD TV market, trailing companies like Samsung, and appears to be looking at 3D TVs as an area for growth potential.

But it has a battle on its hands competing with other big firms that have the same idea. Fellow South Korean company Samsung already started its big push on 3D TVs earlier in the year, while Japanese companies like Sony and Panasonic also have their own targets.

The success of the 3D flick Avatar has convinced the TV manufacturers that there is a market for 3D TVs, but others aren't convinced yet, due to the need for special 3D glasses and the glaring lack of 3D media content so far.

Look how many years its taken to get a bit of HD content on current TV's. What make them think that people will pay ridiculous prices to be the first to get 3D TV's that they'll only be able th watch the few select movies on.!
Besides that, it'll just be an overpriced TV.

Exactly, HD Home and Away in full 3D? Gahhhh nothing worse. Want the full experience, go to the cinema with mates, nothing beats it.

I'll wait til the glassesless(tm) tvs come down to the price of regular teles. My wife gets a headache with polarised glasses. And what happens when 5 mates come over to watch the footy? only 2 pairs of glasses wont cut it.

Yeah a family of four will have to fork out more money for an extra two pairs of glasses. And they look to be around US$150 at the moment.

On top of what fliptopia said, if one of the mates has glasses too, you'd have to make sure that they are compatible with the TV. Some TVs are using different 3D methods to the others (eg Sony's non-polarised glasses)

imo its only worth getting a 3D monitor for gaming atm. With the nVidia tech being pretty decent and the amount of games it supports and usualy only one person using the PC its a better option for entry level 3D to see if you like it in the home environment.

even anaglyph 3d is pretty decent on any old monitor if you've got some decent anaglyph glasses.
and iz3d does ATI and nVidia so yeh good times. I actually prefer the iz3d in some ways to 3dvision
