Valve release Portal for free!

Portal is absolutely free until May 24th!

Portal. The game that took the idea of puzzles and turned it upside down has enjoyed a very loyal audience, and has now finally hit a point where the level of awesomeness has increased even more.

Valve saw the unflinching loyalty that fans had for the game, and to hopefully spread more copies of the game out there (inevitably as a very clever marketing scheme for Portal 2), they're releasing it as a totally free download.

They've thrown up a neat page that describes exactly how free the game is, written in the usual Valve sense of humour:

"Well, technically speaking, there are some strings attached. Fortunately, they're entirely decorative. We just like the way they look, swaying in the gentle breeze created by a million people simultanously fainting from shock at the news that Portal is free. Now you have no reason not to try Portal."

If you've been living in a cave for the past three years and haven't had a chance to play the game, there's never been a better time to start than right now.

These sorts of promotions have done very well for Valve in the past, and the huge uptake of new Portal players is sure to give everyone a taste of what to expect for the sequel - hopefully spurring sales.

Head to the Portal download page!
