Introducing the Atomic Reactor podcast!

Catch up with the Atomic regulars and some old hands in the first Atomic podcast!

Okay, so maybe we're a little late to the whole podcast thing - but we've pulled ourselves away from our various gaming addictions, overclocking habits, and vanity projects to put together something we call the Atomic Reactor.

For our first issue (chat? iteration? blabber?) we're pulling apart the recent Atomicans' Choice Awards. While there are some predictable results, there's also a lot of really surprising winners, and overall the final picture of Atomican hardware is pretty fascinating. So we're going through it category-by-category, talking about your top choices, our own fave hardware, and generally talking about the stuff we love - tech!

And for all you old-school Atomic fans, you'll be pleased to know that Justin and I are joined by one of Atomic's founders, ex-Technical Editor John Gilloolly! He's working for our sister title PC Authority at the moment, so we've roped him back into the Atomic fold.

So don't waste time - download the full half hour 'cast now!

And let us know what stuff you'd like to hear us cover in the future. We're very curious to see how this first one is received, and if we do more we want to make sure we're delivering something interesting.

WIN
on a more general note, does product loyalty matter any more, generally aside from the creme of the crop, the tech is pretty standard and not vary all that much across the board. all in all, with the current understanding of the science and tech paradigm, component performance is so high with transfer speeds and software bottle necking everything, with the technology slowly stagnating. Can we really go much further, or does everything need to change?

good podcast

^_^

Yay John Gilloolly(as I have been following him on PCA site and Mag) as well as the Atomic Staff regulars in a podcast just wondering how regular are they going to be or is it a once off?

"the first Atomic podcast!"

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't there a couple of podcasts released a couple of years ago under another Ed?

I'll have to have a listen on the drive home after work today...

My first Atomic podcast?

:)

Alternately, like all good dictators, I can reset the calender to Year Zero upon my assumption of the Editorship, and cast out all the apostates before me!

Well you wouldn't be the first dictator to try to re-write history.

Still, downloading now and will listen to it on the way home in my car. Should be good!

Hawkeye
May 14, 2010 6:43 PM
When you can work out whether or not Frunj was actually nervous.

May 14, 2010 7:19 PM
Well if you factor in multiple universes then he has a good chance of being either at once.

the marketing department should not be involved in the next one.

Sparrow, like the site, the e-zine and the magazine, this is something that costs us to make. We're giving it away free, so it's got to make money somehow. It's just like commercial radio.

Also, our marketing department wasn't involved with it all, by the way. We don't even have one!

I thought it was great! Maybe you could change the intro to "And now you're listening to the smooth sultry sounds of Dr H'worth and the Frunggggg". ;) or maybe just keep the Reactor bit.
Seriously my only cons would be the half time ad just sounded like it was mixed funny, like the S's had echo or something(maybe subliminal messages??)

just for curiosity when we buy the magazine what are we paying for exactly? The articles? the paper it is printed on? the printer and ink? you the writers? Is there a "rough" cost breakdown availible to the public.

or would you kindly point me in the right direction to begiun to asertane this info.

curious thats all

Sparrow, the best place to ask is in the Forums, specifically in Feedback. Though we don't give such a breakdown on costs normally; I'll let David Hollingworth answer that one. Just make a thread over there :)

Top podcast guys, I enjoyed it. Was great to go a bit beyond the feature in the magazine and hear your thoughts on what sort of kit we all have.

The podcast was good and I'll subscribe if it goes to iTunes too, although I second an earlier request on less echo. What did you use to record it?
TheFrunj
May 19, 2010 10:06 PM
Hasimir, we used mics in a smallish room, with mainly glass rather than normal wall (very hard, reflective). I think that John's voice in the second half was not-so-echoey because he was close to the mic, but David and I were further away.

I'll poke someone about this iTunes thing tomorrow, though it's a dark and scary concept and I don't like it :P
