New movie and video service to launch on the PSN this month. Updated: Classic movie service to be added later in the year.
The PlayStation 3's just become even more of an entertainment hub, following this morning's announcement of a video delivery service to launch on the 20th of May this year.
There'll be hundreds of films to rent or own, from many of the major players. "The films come from major movie studios and distributors including 20th Century Fox, ContentFilm, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios, Universal, Roadshow Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution," said a Sony release.
The pricing model is $3.99 to rent a HD Or SD film, while purchasing to own will start at $7.99. Launch titles include Avatar, Inglourious Basterds, Sherlock Holmes and Surrogates.
Update, 19.5.2010: It's just been announced (and reported below by commenter wingnut0021) that Sony will be partnering with another movie service later this year. MUBI, and online movie library that specialises in classics and arthouse titles ranging from Battleship Potemkin to Forrest Gump. And there's a lot of Coen Brothers material, too, so it gets a giant thumbs up from us.
MUBI currently has over 300 films. At launch PSN users will need to download the MUBI app from the PlayStation Store, and then watch away. No news yet on additional pricing, but the MUBI site itself charges $2 for a single film or $8 for five, with an option to subscribe for $8 per month to get unlimited movies.
