Foxtel and Microsoft bring cable TV to Xbox LIVE

Get Foxtel's TV service on your Xbox 360 later this year!

In what the two new partners are calling a ground-breaking agreement, Foxtel and Microsoft have just announced a new partnership that will bring a new range of entertainment to the Xbox LIVE service.

FOXTEL by Xbox LIVE (could they have found a more awkward name?) will deliver video-on-demand services and channels such as Discovery, MTV and more to the Xbox 360. No set-top-box will be required, and the service will be available to all homes with a broadband correction. An Xbox Gold subscription will also be necessary.

"This is a very exciting new frontier," FOXTEL Chief Executive and Managing Director, Kim Williams AM said in a release. "FOXTEL by Xbox LIVE will provide our 1.6 million subscribing households, as well as new customers, a transformative way of receiving and enjoying FOXTEL over the internet."

Beyond coming at the end of the year, there is no set date, nor have any packages or pricing details been released. More details will drop closer to the launch, we've been told.

This announcement follows the news that the PS3 will be delivering its own video-on-demand service.

Lets hope ISPs get on board with unmetered traffic or this won't work.

If this won't be unmetered by ISP's, it will kill your bandwidth in the first 3 days of your billing month.

I certainly won't be participating in this.

This will only work if you have unmetered traffic on Telstra Bigpond.

IMHO, it'll only work if you're on Bigpond Cable. Already paying through the nose to Fu$@stra.

Pay-TV is repetitive, pay-tv is repetitive? Of course Pay-TV is repetitive!

Why waste your hard-earned money on repeated content. A lot of the content offered by Foxtel and Austar is repetitive and in some cases is aired on free-to-air TV shortly after airing on pay-tv.

The internet is a wonderful place and that will always be the best source of movies, music and TV shows. I have pay TV and can't even get the latest episodes of the Simpsons (for example), yet I can get on the net and watch the latest episode that aired in the US within days of it being aired.

Don't be fooled by a poor marketing gimmick by Foxtel and Microsoft.

agreed! what a double dipping ripoff that you need to have Gold membership as well as then pay for the Foxtel service.

This is why in the UK the BBC and MS haven't come to an agreement about allowing streaming of TV shows as people are already paying a TV license the BBC cant allow people to have to pay a second time just to watch on Xbox.
