Watch shit go boom in the Mafia II PhysX trailer

Video: Things go boom in the latest trailer for Mafia II. UPDATED

Blowing stuff up - it's a rare pleasure, and one of the true joys of gaming. In our favourite virtual worlds many things seem to exist purely so that you can reduce them to flaming wreckage. Try the same thing in real life that this new Mafia II trailer shows, and you'd end up in jail.

In game, though... it's all innocent gravy, baby.

And what's more, this new trailer shows off just how 'splodey the game's going to be thanks to Nvidia's PhysX technology - just don't get us started on the whole game engine licensing malarkey!

Boom! Mafia II is out on all major platforms at the end of August.

UPDATE: We've heard back from local 2K reps, and can confirm that the PhysX optimisation is only on PC. However, they're going further up the chain to find out if this is an Nvidia-card-only deal. We'll keep you informed.

I thought PhysX wasn't supported on consoles.... So are they going to implement it in a purely CPU fashion or are they just going to screw us ATI-ers and some console players?

I've asked that very question myself! Just waiting to hear back.

I hope it’s the CPU method although I remain doubtful. If its not then it will be a shame because I really liked the first game and I’d like to get the full experience but I’m not going to pay $400+ for a game that really my hardware should run anyway.
I think it was one of the first truly cinematic games I had played.... except for that race level :-(

There's plenty of other reasons why players regard Mafia so highly, least of all being the graphics. Whilst the particle effects are nice, they really aren't a deal breaker, especially when they could've done a lot of other things to the engine (like make those explosions look better). I'll still be buying this, and an ATi card regardless.

Damn. Please don't be optimized for nVidia. I was just getting used to the idea of not using one again... and then this happens. The only game I have been looking forward to.

Please, please, please only be for console.
