Creative Assembly return to the beginning with Shogun 2

Video: Shogun 2 Total War to conquer PC strategy gamers next year. Hai! UPDATED - now with trailer!

Huge news today for fans of the Total War series - next year will see the popular strategy franchise return to is samurai roots with the release of Shogun 2 Total War.

The new game will be a fully 3D return to glory, with fully rendered land and sea battles, a huge campaign map, and even a whole new AI engine. The new tactical brains behind the game will be inspired by in depth study of Sun Tzu's classic Art of War. Players will take on the role of a feudal Japanese Daimyo, or warlord, to unite Japan using military, economic and diplomatic power.

"Developing Shogun 2: Total War gives us the opportunity to use recent technology to portray one of history's most exciting civil wars." commented Mike Simpson, Creative Director at The Creative Assembly. "Ever since we developed Shogun: Total War 10 years ago, the team at The Creative Assembly has always dreamt of using our accumulated experience to revisit Total War in Feudal Japan."

And yes, in the interests of full journalistic disclosure, this does make us very happy in our baggy samurai pants.

UPDATE: We've just uploaded the first trailer for the new game. It's pretty much just a teaser, and features no real gameplay, but it's still enough to get us quite excited. But we are pretty tragic when it comes to the Total War series.

This is fantasic, the only game in the series I havent yet played! But how long can they keep doing it, eventually it'll be rinse repeat, sure I'd love to see a Rome 2, but what about somehting outside the box?

This is a good one to go back to, as they'll really be able to deliver stupidly rich new take no the game. And in 3D it'll look spectacular.

As to the future, that's interesting. I'd be really curious to see these guys take on something like World War 1, or the American Civil War, even.

I can't wait for this one.

Brilliant setting and these guys are kings of the strategy game (Relic a close second).

What about Caveman: Total War?
I'm sure they could do it somehow.

Actually, I'd kill any number of people if they did some kind of gritty fantasy Total War.

I was thinking Malazan Empire: Total War, actually. That said, there is a really good looking Warhammer Fantasy mod for Medieval 2. Could be worth looking at.

That said, a 40k strategy game at that scale would be just... brilliant. Small squads of marines, platoons of guard... Titans striding across the battlefields... oh yeah.

So awesome that GW would never do it. Plus, wasn't there a WFB RTS done a couple of years ago?

For a moment there, right at the begining, I was expecting Byakuya Kuchiki to walk onto the screen...
