E3 2010: The new, smaller Xbox 360 announced at E3, shipping to stores this week. And it looks kinda sexy.

At Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference today a big announcement dropped - a new version of the Xbox 360.

MS is taking a leaf out of Sony's book, bringing out a smaller, sleeker version of the console. It's got a 250GB hard drive, built in wireless functionality and will cost the same as the current build. 

It's a killer move, coming on top of the new Kinect interface. Looks like one's coming to Atomic, too, so we'll take a closer look at it as soon as we can. In the meantime... click on the pic for a sneak peak.

 If they'd put a blu-ray drive in it, I'd have bought one within 5 minutes of it being released.

 Just an extra tidbit I found (because bits of tid are handy), the new 360 slim is supposed to be roughly US$299 at retail - so basically the same price as what we've got at the high-end now. Neato.

 you guys are such drama queens, iv had my xbox 360 from the year it came out and iv never had an issue, no RROD or anything, maybe your problem is DUST!, clean your filthy rooms nerds maybe then they wont get cloged up like your pc sitting in the corner. its amazing how arragant you people are, sure theres one thing we would all like to see and thats a blu-ray drive on the damn thing, but dont you understand that the tech in the 360 is dated thus they have shrunk the dye of the 3 core heater, much like they do with laptops these days....

 GG just got myself a free XBOX360 Arcade via a friend whom bought a laptop from Hardly Normal(Harvey Norman) and M$ DOES THIS. I guess I can't complain free is free after all.

 so, the tech is dated, but they re-engineered the core of the machine, but couldn't include blue ray at the same time? and if the price of the box is the same, i doubt they've implemented a new assembly line to take into account the shrunken die.

PPSs My 360 is kept in a dust free environment in a lounge room.
If i put the machine into a cabinet, even with the door open it will lock up. The only saving grace is that its usually kept on the cold tiles. I've known plenty of friends with dramatic heating issues with these machines that are not simply dust. And thanks for the arrogance in assuming all posters are 16 year old fan boys. :)

 Alright, I've been doing some research into the slim, YES microsoft shrunk the die. The console is now running a 45nm CPU/GPU solution. However, there are no specifics on what the core actually is. Just because the die is smaller, does not mean it will run cooler. Particularly if its using more cores.

 sheok, the design would be identical to the previous gen chip, just reworked for the smaller process. Heat will drop accordingly as less voltage should be needed to drive it at that process, and there are no additional cores (games are coded for the existing consoles, so adding them would be wasted potential).

 @ Alkahest... it's the truth. A PS3 is just plain better despite what games come out on Xbox. If you have a PC and a PS3... there isn't much you will miss out on. Of course YOU will want this new xbox... it's shiny, which as we know... shiny is irresistible to idiots.

 Apparently the noise and heat have been addressed by the die shrink and changing the double small fans to a large single fan. How large a fan and what CFM it pushes(and more importantly can we modify the cooling) is what I want Atomic to find out soon.

 Saw a preview over at ausgamers, their guy had his ear to the running console and he couldn't hear it. So sounds like they have addressed the sound issue.

After watching a few vids on this I want one, but I have an elite already so can't justify the cost .. unless my elite dies .. Hmmm *looks at elite with axe in his hand*

 Anyone else think it looks ugly? I own a PC, being as large as a 360 isn't a problem for me... I personally prefer an Ethernet cable over a Wireless connection anyway.

As smadge1 said if they'de integrated a blu-ray player, or perhaps released a more expensive version witha blu-ray player it could possibly be an upgrade; and for the average person the 40GB hard drive on the Arcane is easily enough storage space.

@SceptreCore, We can all admit that PS3's hardware is probably better.. but in gaming (which is what these things are here to do) XBox is so much better, plus just using an xbox just seems so much smoother.. PS3 lost me back at the non backwards compatible console release

 Oh noes... that means you have to use your PS2 for PS2 games. And no. PS3 controllers are much more comfortable, and better for gaming. And the games for Xbox are very PC like so they can be ported to PC, which is why they run so well on Xbox. And sony always get the best titles... like Gran Turismo for instance.

 @sceptrecore. I like the ps3 - I have one :P

The controller is good but not that great. my right pinky in particular cramps up after a while and I don't have massive hands either. i dont know what it is and the dual sticks could be better and the curves on the shoulder pads aren't that comfy.

in saying that, this is a nice update for xbox 360 users and those thining of one. Cause I'm sure MS have learnt from their mistakes with the build and its quieter! OMG QUIETER haha. I would love to have it come with a blu-ray but there's no denying that it would cost a little more, hopefully to much than the larger ps3? now that it has wifi N built in. I wish the new ps3 had that update.

I mainly got my ps3 for the blu-ray which cancelled out the xbox360 for me.

 My hands are quite large. And the PS controller is comfortable enough for me to play for hours. Also there is something excellent about it's simplicity, and all the buttons are easier to reach. An Xbox controller feels like too much real estate, which you don't want on an FPS game at a hard level.

 For you, SceptreCore, the PS3 is The Awesome. It has the games you like, and the controller fits nicely in your hand. Those are the very same arguments I use for why I have an Xbox. I can't use a PS3 controller for more than 5 minutes, or it feels like my thumbs are going to fall off, and I'm not interested in Metal Gear Solid, or any of those Japanese games, and I'm mightily enjoying Forza 3. It's all horses for courses.

It seems to me to be a nice update. If I didn't already have an Xbox, I'd be very tempted. My 360 does sometimes remind me of a vacuum cleaner when it gets going, so the noise and temperature reduction is great.
