What Julia Gillard as PM might mean for you...

What Julia Gillard as PM might mean for you...

You may think the change in Australia's leadership, just announced this morning, has almost no impact on us. Well, Senator Conroy might go too...

Yep, Atomic's talking politics again. With Julia Gillard stepping into the shoes of the prime minister, we could well see a mammoth reshuffle of cabinet positions. More importantly for gamers and netizens, this could see the much reviled Senator Conroy out of a job, possibly replaced by staunch Gillard supporter, Senator Kate Lundy.

Our sister site, ITnews, reports that Lundy tweeted her support of Gillard late last night, along with speculation of what Gillard's success might mean for Canberran Senator.

So, having chatted with some of the ITnews bods about this, how's this for some speculation: Lundy's background as a programmer makes her a remarkably well-informed choice for Conroy's Communications portfolio, and her support of Gillard has been very public. Conroy's Net Filter proposition, so unpopular that it's been shelved until after an election, could well be let slide entirely in that case.

It's a pipe-dream at the moment, but we can hope, right? Hell, maybe we'll even see some movement on an R18 rating for games with a new broom through parliamentary ranks.

"Lundy's background as a programmer makes her a remarkably well-informed choice for Conroy's Communications portfolio"

Hmm. I would have thought that meant she was guaranteed not to get that portfolio, given the way previous governments here have 'worked'.

I doubt they'll make more changes, too much change is a bad thing in politics. It makes people think weak.

After the election if she wins it would be a possible change, but not after just ousting Rudd.

I'd love to be wrong though. He needs to go. He's a joke.

As opposed to the opposition who are just as bad? I reckon if Gillard can rebuild her bench with some stronger characters they would have a much better chance.

NBN will be death throe for all ISP's if telstra get to keep it. Gillard is better in many ways she is more open than Rudd was ,which was his downfall.

The nutcase fundie minority is too well seated as the balance of power unfortunately, and their price for being good little senators and passing laws is having their social agenda pushed in the communications portfolio.

I don't see a change coming until a lot more people wake up.

Its because of Sen.Lundy that my suburb has ADSL. She worked hard for us to get it.I'll support her if she does the right thing again.

Labor knows that the plan is unpopular with the young, but popular with the christian right.
Unfortunately labor take the young vote for granted, and
think they can get the christian right to vote for them, which is not going to happen anyway.
Now is the perfect time to remove unpopular policies.

I'd just like to say that Lundy has been doing awesome work in the government 2.0/open government space. You can see what she's all about at http://www.katelundy.com.au/

It would be awesome to see her replace Conroy.

Yeah, the more people I talk to, the more I think it's going to fall out like this: Conroy stays, but the filter gets quietly forgotten. Sure, the religious lobbyists will be cranky, but that's Conroy's fault for cosying up to them in the first place.

i dunno about you guys, but i'd be even more inclined to vote for her if she ousts conroy before the election and not after.

I'd be more inclined to vote for her if she has a policy on really doing something about climate change.

*sigh* unsupported speculation.

Gillard will change nothing because she is only a puppet for the factions. If anything she will probably keep the filter policy because conroy's faction put her into power. Anyone who thinks that she will make major changes or bring the party back to the left side is kidding themselves.

The majority will vote Gillard because she is a woman and looks like she will do a good job. Labor will come back as or more powerful than before and the Liberals/Greens will be weaker. All of this means that the filter legislation will be easier to push through the senate.

It is unsupported, yes - thus the words 'might', 'could' and, well, 'speculation' that I've used in the article :)

I'll also add that Gillard is pro-abortion and I believe an atheist. The ACL is not going to support that.

Greens should get the balance of power.
If Labor do not preference the greens next election, then they deserve Fielding and liberal obstructionism.
And if Labor lose, at least the greens will be there to stop Abbott being a tool.

You either vote for Ranga or Budgie Smuggler--- Politics has always been about the lesser evil--- The question is, which evil will you vote for?

As long as one of the evils continues the fibre to the home infrastructure they will have my vote. We are way behind in that regard and there is no room left up there for new satellites to orbit.
Mikee
Jun 29, 2010 11:05 AM
perhaps, there should be some room left for one more satellite lol, Kevin tried to get in to office twice, but Julia refused him a position:) please note: there is only enough fuel for 3 years, after 3 years the satellite orbit may decay due to a lack of propellant to raise it to a suitable position;) lol

Funny how I KNEW Julia was ready for the job way back when she mentioned that thing about Nasa and the being on the first manned Mars flight.

Has ANYBODY told Nasa the good news yet?
