Blizzard backs down on the real names issue

Mike Morhaime personally responds to the Real ID outcry, as Blizzard backs down on the move to force real names on forum users.

This piece of news broke over the weekend, and it's really all over the place by now. But in the interests of full and open coverage, we're catching up with it today - Blizzard's backed down from forcing its forum users to use their real names online.

The announcement was made by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in an open letter to the community, reprinted below in full.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as the ability to rate posts up or down, post highlighting based on rating, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

So what do you guys think? You were all pretty vocally against the move - does Mike's response satisfy?

Yeah I sniff a publicity stunt - designed to hate Blizz for a few mins then worship them even more for not forcing real names... "slaps face".

But you're not paranoid... :)

Though, a friend of mine had an even more cunning idea: he thinks Blizzard was simply load-testing their forum hardware!

Watch them bring it back with minor changes as a 'test 'on a separate board for the Cataclysm beta, then make anyone who wants to 'play' the beta have to opt in.

With 6 months of (next to) no new WoW content or other new MMO's the same people that cried will opt in to play the beta, get used to it and magically accept it when it goes live...

Athlonite this is true, but we'd probably be surprised the amount of ppl who do use real names in their details, real address info, contact details and spouse information, the silly ones - the ones that would be effected most.

I couldn't understand why they can't just implement the same 'powerful' chat system without the use of real names... I don't really care either way, but this is a better outcome than before.

Probably a stunt to make Australians forget about the being confined to Asia-Pacific Multiplay only

Athlonite:
If you wanted to pay for your WoW account via a credit card you had to put in your real name.
If you want to get your account back should it be hacked, you had to put in your real name.
Some people signed up with Battlenet for Diablo 2 many years ago, and only now had they changed the rules. You can't have your "real name" changed after the fact, so if you put in a real one all those years ago, for good reason, now you are in trouble.
