XFX says BANG! with its new 5970 Gun card

Sneak Peek: We just got XFX's shiny new limited edition 5970 BE. And it's pretty damn cool!

We admit it - there are certain perks to the job. Interesting trips overseas, early access to hot games, and more hardware to play with than you can poke a stick of low-latency RAM at. And here's the latest - the chance to play around with the new XFX 5970 BE.

Or, more accurately, its limited edition packaging which is in the form of a sleek, bullpup style SMG. Oh yes.

So, of course, we're excited. We're a bit of a gun fan, to be honest, and this is just too cool. Even better, the incredible detail in this near prop-level piece of plastic. It also looks like something you'd expect to see in Ghost in the Shell - another thing in its favor. So just how excited were we?

Well, Justin stealthily filmed this...

Hmm... nerdy.

Stay tuned for a full unboxing and photo gallery in the next day or two.

So you've got your new card and your real excited but I wouldn't crack the packaging 'til I was home safe in doors or the headline might read:
"An unemployed youth, suspected of downloading pron and playing violent pc games non-stop was gunned down as he went on a shooting rampage in a mall today"
Admittedly tomorrow when they realise it was a replica the headlines will read:
"Yesterday a god fearing youth known for helping the elderly was accidentily shot 48 times and tasered twice by misfiring police weapons"

Actually imitation firearms laws in the process of being changed:
• All imitation firearms (longarms and handguns) will be treated as 'Prohibited weapons' under the Control of Weapons Act 1990;
• An imitation firearms is defined as "a device, the appearance of which could reasonably be mistaken for that of an operable firearm, but which is not designed or adapted to discharge shot or a bullet or other missile by the expansion of gases produced in the device by the ignition of strongly combustible materials or by compressed air or other gases, whether stored in the device in pressurised containers or produced in the device by mechanical means and is not capable of being made to do so"
• Either a Governor in Council exemption or a Chief Commissioner's approval will be required to display, possess, carry, use, import or sell imitation firearms.

So, this may well some become illegal unless you hold a permit and lock it in a gun safe.

QLD has similar laws in progress:

Already in force in NSW:

Awesome video - nerd knowledge on display in an unashamed fashion (possibly due to the implication some of your staff could 'cap' any nay-sayers?).

Will be interesting to see how this compares to the Ares and Accelero cooled Sapphire units..

You see that little orange bit on the front of the toy?

That's to help police not 'reasonably mistake this for a firearm'.

Aug 26, 2010 10:47 AM
OR that orange part could be a flash suppressor for the firing of blanks.

The orange marker on front of guns is to indercate that its firing blanks. Well thats for live weapons and cap guns at least.

I thought replicer weapons were already illegal without a permit. But wouldn't this gun fall under the Toy category rather than replica?

Red tips are USA law for realistic toys, but mean nothing in Australia. Victoria almost passed a law for fluoro yellow tips last year, but the law got canned whilst in the amnesty period to make way for the current round of imitation firearm control.

A replica is something that is very close to a real firmearm, with moving parts etc.
An imitation is something that could be reasonably mistaken for a real firearm. Subjective opinion.

Toys are OK regardless, but whether or not its a toy or an imitation is up to the state police firearms division to make a ruling.
Today, it doesn't matter, imitations are fine to use "with lawful purpose."

If the Vic and QLD laws are passed, its likely to be classified as an imitation and hence be a prohibited weapon.

By the way, I work in the combat simulation industry and have frequent contact with the police on this kind of stuff.
