3D movie playback debuts on PS3 today

The latest PS3 update will deliver full 3D functionality to every PlayStation 3 - all you need now is a TV to match! And to really like 3D...

Update 3.50 for the PlayStation 3 goes live today, and with it comes full 3D movie functionality for the Sony-built console.

The PS3 has been 3D game capable for some time, but now full movie playback's being enabled too. Sony claims that this update makes the PS3 the most 'future proof' home entertainment system available, and in today's release goes on to add that "3D entertainment has been highly talked about in 2010."

Which, we guess, is true - though for a lot of people in the know it's only in terms of what 3D has failed to deliver, especially in the realm of adding anything worthwhile to movie making.

Aside, of course, from making James Cameron even more insufferable.

if its gonna raise sales in 3D TV it would have to be for this one and sport fanatics, but isn't the next generation 3D idiot box without the glasses coming soon?

A glassesless 3D tv would be very difficult to make, the 3DS does it but you must remain in a certain position while watching the screen, but who knows... some brainiac might of invented something already!

LOL@Physt.

I'll bother with 3D TV when there's content to warrant it.
I barely get time at my PS3 as it is... sooo many games to finish. >_<

yeah i'm loving the update, gives my ps so much more staying power, another fantastic edition to keep it the most viable home multimedia system.

the problem is my tv is brain tingly awesome, it is huge...and it is 3 years old now...it works just as good for everything and you really need to have an led tv next to it to really tell the difference but darn it it doesn't have any 3d.

although i'm not a big fan of 3d atm (it's still to limited and without major support) it has amazing games and movies potential i just hope to god someone invents a 3d set top box hack because getting another tv now would just be stupid...maybe in another 3 years

I purchased a 52" 3D Samsung screen which I am very happy with, mind you the lack of 3D movie releases are under-whelming, although it should be already widely known that a large amount of 3D titles will be available late October according to Sony to coincide with the release of their new bravias.

The 3D content I have downloaded and played on PS3 certainly is fun, but to be honest I was just after a new LCD(LED) so it made sense to get one with 3D too.
