The Witcher 2 shows non-linear gameplay

Video: Watch a unique take on a game trailer as a couple of Witcher NPCs tell the tale of Geralt's escape from prison.

You know the average game trailer set up - text crawl, maybe some dev doing an intro, then a minute or two of frenetic gameplay. The latest Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings trailer takes a different tack, though.

The Witcher 2 is all about non-linearity and tackling the game in whatever way you want, so of course that's what this trailer is about - watching the ways in which Geralt gets out of a particularly nasty scrape - but it's all told by a pretty lady and a grumpy dwarf telling the tale in a tavern, and arguing over who gets the story right.

It's a neat take, and works well to show off the wealth of choice in the game. It also shows off some of the brutal combat, from brawling and unarmed take-downs (elbow to the back of the skull - just say no) to wide-swinging sword-play.

And there might be boobs. But that could just be the dwarf getting fanciful.

The Witcher 2 comes out on PC (woo!) in the first quarter of next year.

The Witcher was the first game (for me) that matched how good the book was.

I hope they have stayed true to form on this one

Much is made of "non linear" or "decision matrices" in gaming these days, but given the pedigree, I'm hoping we see some really sophisticated things from CDPR with TW2.

Impressive trailer, an interesting presentation choice and some very pretty things to see. And Zoltan and Triss are getting along as well as ever, I see :-)

Yikes, another awesome game to play....looks like someone needs to research a true "minimal sleep" system to free to those 5-6 hours I waste each night....
