The GTX580 launch: flawed?

Speculation: We've contacted multiple NVIDIA board partners about the upcoming GTX580, and it's looking like a shitstorm...

Graphics technologies are not simple to develop. Nowhere is there a clearer example of this than the current-generation NVIDIA GTX480 card - a behemoth that boasts three billion transistors inside its GF100 core. To reach new levels of performance, NVIDIA had to basically pull a doubling of the previous architecture out of its engineering department, a process taking a year or more, and we explained that process in our initial review:

There are four GPCs in the GF100 core, and each is an entirely self-contained ecosystem of processing components that can function individually; meaning that carving the core up to create lower-end models will be much easier. Inside each GPC resides a total of four large blocks called Streaming Multiprocessors, or SMs.

These SMs each contain 32 CUDA Cores, the processors that do the actual calculation work, though it appears that a single SM in the GF100 is deactivated. The fifteen functional SMs add up to a total of 480 CUDA Cores.

However when the GTX480 launched it was less than the breathtaking performer we were hoping it would be. It was fast, don't get us wrong, but performance only just matched up with the then months-old ATI HD5870 in most situations. Now that there's a new family of cards coming from team red, it seems that the current NVIDIA green will lose out in the performance stakes. But developing a whole new architecture is costly and time-intensive. How could NVIDIA bring the performance back toward its camp? The answer: do what we predicted in our first review.

We may see limited runs of the GF100 with higher frequencies, or the full complement of 512 CUDA Cores, but this is almost as far as the architecture can go.

As leaked from multiple sources, it appears that NVIDIA have gone down exactly the same route we speculated they would, resulting in a brand-new (not particularly different) GTX580 card, based on what they're calling the GF110. Unfortunately for some of the manufacturing partners, it seems at this early stage that NVIDIA has failed to make them aware of it!

We've also heard rumblings around the place that the launch of the GTX580 will coincide with the AMD 6970, both due to hit on the 22nd of November. The NVIDIA launch is a weird one. Taking into account the shortness of time since its last launch, and that the new card is coming on the same day as its only real competitor, this is just too close to be called a coincidence - and it's more of a knee-jerk reaction that appears to be constructed solely to take the wind out of the competition's sails.

We contacted four of NVIDIA's top partners on the phone this afternoon, and we've paraphrased the conversations below:

Atomic: Hi {A}, we were wondering when we'd be able to get a review sample of the new GTX580? We were told to expect them roughly by the 9th of November.

Partner A: We're getting some in mid November. You'll be getting one then.

Atomic: Hi {B}, when will we be getting one of your GTX580 cards?

Partner B: We're not actually sure. Stock might be in by December, but we haven't got a confirmation at this stage.

Atomic: Hi {C}, when can we expect the new GTX580 card?

Partner C: ....We don't have that card on our roadmap. Does it exist?

Atomic: Hi {D}. So, how's about that new GTX580?

Partner D: We're getting stock in soon, so expect the card shortly.

While all of the information we've received at this point is speculative it's looking more and more like NVIDIA are simply in a panic; trying to plug up the gaps with semi-new cards as a stopgap solution before (we hope) a more competitive architecture can launch. We're hoping to give it a full run-down in Issue 120 of the magazine - assuming, that is, we get our hands on a card.

It seems NVIDIA has not had a real win over ATI since the 8800gt. They still make great cards but for the price, ATI make NVIDIA look like an unattractive upgrade option.

(still using an 8800gt BTW)

It seems I was right.... and Nesquick was wrong. My universe has just started celebrating.

"little happy songs".

I would jest about having posted this news first. But you guys have really picked up the phone when I called you guys out for being late with info. And you've even taken it that one step further. I had no idea that partners were already preparing for installing chips into PCB's.

Oh, it the third Partner XFX? :p

@SceptreCore:
XFX ditched Nividia ages ago, they've been doing so well for AMD they wouldnt bother and would just go GTFO on Nividia.

It is possible Nvidia know they aren't making the 22nd November date (that they will announce a delay closer to the date). The strategy here is to take attention away from the AMD cards launch and to stop people buying an AMD at launch because they think the Nvidia cards will be sooner then they really are going to be.

i hope partner A is correct...

@ GeekyTalon. Yeah I know. But they didn't actually officially ditch nVidia till recently because nVidia wouldn't give them any GTX400 chips because they started selling AMD.

@Bundy 2.0
Dont think so, we consumers dont have EXTREMELY big attention spans for products and companies. Even if Nividia isn't gonna make it, thats just gonna show how incapable they are. Even if Nividia tackles our attention we can still go buy a 6970 when it rolls in. Nividia is just in shambles. Somebody send them a "get well" card!

@SceptreCore OH? o_O well nice to have known more details. Nividia sounds like a kid chucking a tantrum. XFX is a great partner, nividia sounds like a hag. Poor bastards.

Ooops I tabbed to quick...

Anyways agreed - obviously it's a management ploy to steal wind from the competitors sails by releasing this, all companies do it, one way or another, with only one intention, always if it fits into their production life cycle.

Sad. I have an enduring fondness for Nvidia (I've been around long enough to have known a world without them!), some of the best GPUs I've owned have had their sexeh chippehs at their heart.
Best action would have been to simply ignore AMD's new card.

It seems odd to we that with all the talk of PC gaming decline that there is still feace competition for high end gaming cards.
It must be pride over necessity.
Most FPS games that would come even close to pushing these new cards are just ported versions of Xbox and PS3 games and therefore need to be able to run on 2005 tech hardware.
Much as it would give me a buzz to have something like a 5970 if I was upgrading, when I installed the resent MOH game running on a 4870 the game recommended the highest settings and it still looked very ordinary at the games highest resolution.

Unfortunately yes AMD do have the best Hardware, But the best Hardware is useless unless you have the best Drivers to support it and that is where AMD lacks and are allowing Nvidia to release only ok hardware with way better drivers.

Til AMD picks up its Driver quality I'll stick with Nvidia's game playing.

2 months on and I think in hindsight we can say the author has had to eat his words. You could hardly call the launch or card flawed. The pricing issues with ATI's 69xx series however was a flawed launch. I love these speculation articles that contain no follow up when they turn out to be incorrect. All they do is misinform the public.

Um, actually... I would still call the launch flawed.

I don't know what else you could call it when even Nvidia's partners didn't know what was going on. The fact that card is okay doesn't change the launch.

You'll also note that we've covered the pricing issue with AMD quite well.

So, in short, no words eaten at all :)
